A Florida mother was arrested after deputies said she left her four children without overnight adult supervision while traveling to Las Vegas for work. The children, ages 9, 11, 12 and 14, were found alone at their Kissimmee home after one child called 911 to report that a dumbbell had struck the 9-year-old boy. The mother was arrested at the airport when she returned to Florida on Oct. 23, 2026.

Authorities said the children’s father took them to his home while investigators arranged to meet the mother after her flight. She faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and was booked into the Orange County Jail.

911 call brings deputies to Kissimmee home

Deputies responded to the Kissimmee residence shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2026, after one of the children called 911. The child reported that a dumbbell had fallen on the head of the 9-year-old boy. Fire rescue crews transported the injured child to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged.

When deputies arrived, they found four children inside the home and no adult present. The children were identified as ages 9, 11, 12 and 14. The incident prompted authorities to investigate who was responsible for supervising them and where their mother was located.

Children found without an adult overnight

Deputies reached Irene Miller by telephone during the investigation. Miller, 50, told them she was working in Las Vegas and expected to return on Oct. 23. Investigators determined that she had left Florida on Oct. 18, several days before the children were found without an adult in the home.

The central concern described by authorities was the absence of overnight supervision for four children, including the injured 9-year-old. The sheriff’s office said the children remained without an adult at the residence when deputies arrived, leading to four child-neglect charges.

Mother says babysitter handled daytime checks

Miller told deputies she had arranged for a babysitter to travel from Tampa in the mornings. According to the sheriff’s office, the sitter was expected to help the children get ready for school and check on them afterward.

Authorities said the babysitter was not required to stay overnight. The arrangement therefore did not provide continuous adult supervision while Miller was away in Nevada. After the investigation began, deputies contacted the children’s father, who agreed to take all four children to his home while detectives prepared to meet Miller when she returned.

Airport arrest follows return from Las Vegas

On Oct. 23, deputies approached Miller on the jet bridge after her flight from Las Vegas landed in Florida. Body camera footage showed deputies escorting her through the airport terminal and placing her in handcuffs.

Miller was arrested on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. She was booked into the Orange County Jail. The charges followed the home visit, the child’s injury and the investigation into the supervision arrangement made during her work trip.

Sheriff warns of enforcement in neglect cases

Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the agency would continue investigating allegations involving children who are not properly supervised or cared for.

“The sheriff’s office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children.”

The case remains focused on the allegations surrounding the children’s care while Miller was traveling. The available information identifies the criminal counts and arrest but does not establish the final outcome of the case.
