10-Year-Old Survivor Builds Bond With Teen Lifeguard After California Near-Drowning

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 5, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Nathaniel Rai, a 10-year-old from Texas, has described losing consciousness during a near-drowning in powerful surf off Santa Cruz, California. He was rescued by 16-year-old California State Lifeguard Ryder Williams in an incident recorded on video. The rescue has since led to a close relationship between the Rai and Williams families. The families are in regular contact and are planning to meet again.

Nathaniel was visiting the beach with his mother, Annam Rai, and his 8-year-old sister during a family vacation from Dallas. His father, Sumit Rai, was in Dallas when he learned about the incident and later watched footage of the rescue.

A sudden wave overwhelms a young swimmer

The incident occurred in late July during what was intended to be a relaxing beach trip near Santa Cruz. Nathaniel said he was standing in shallow water and did not plan to go farther out when a large wave suddenly broke over him. He screamed for help, believes he saw the lifeguard, and then lost consciousness.

The conditions included strong currents, undertows and waves estimated by his father at about 10 feet. Sumit Rai said the boy faced a near-death situation because another few seconds in the water could have carried him 15 to 20 feet farther from shore.

A teenage lifeguard carries out the rescue

Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old California State Lifeguard, reached Nathaniel and maintained his grip while bringing him through the turbulent water. The boy was limp and unconscious during part of the rescue, making the effort especially demanding as Williams moved what his father estimated was roughly 100 pounds of weight through the current.

Nathaniel regained consciousness and was breathing by the time he reached the beach. His father said the rescue video made the danger clear, showing the boy submerged in violent surf while the lifeguard worked to keep control of him.

“I started screaming for help. I think I saw the lifeguard and then passed out,” Nathaniel said.

Medical concerns continue after the beach rescue

After reaching shore, Nathaniel coughed up sand that had entered his lungs. Emergency personnel evaluated him and warned the family about secondary drowning, a potentially serious complication in which breathing problems can develop after a person has been removed from the water.

Nathaniel ultimately returned to Dallas and is spending the remainder of the summer with his father. He is preparing to enter sixth grade and enjoys chess, movies and board games. He has also trained in mixed martial arts since age 4 and is a Jiu-Jitsu champion at the U.S. Open Jiu-Jitsu World League.

The rescue develops into a family friendship

The families began speaking regularly after the rescue. Sumit Rai said he considers the Williams family an extension of his own and has become a strong advocate for recognition of the teenager’s actions.

The parents also discovered shared interests, including UFC and mixed martial arts. Shane Williams, Ryder’s father, is a retired firefighter, and Ryder hopes to follow him into the profession. That connection also overlaps with the Rai family’s work. Sumit runs Cancer Check Labs, an organization and business that screens firefighters for cancer risks linked to their work, and Nathaniel has participated in its laboratory activities, exhibits and conferences.

“I am by far his biggest fan, and so I’d love to be there and advocate for him and support him,” Sumit said.

The families plan a future meeting

Although the families had not yet met in person after Nathaniel returned to Texas, Sumit and Shane have remained in daily contact. They are discussing a trip to attend a UFC fight together, giving the four parents and children an opportunity to reunite away from the circumstances of the rescue.

The families were also contacted by the White House about possible recognition for Ryder. Donald Trump had publicly suggested that the teenager deserved an honor for saving Nathaniel. Sumit said he would support any medal, award or other formal recognition for the lifeguard.
