More Than 50 Decomposing Bodies Found at Chicago Funeral Home

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 7, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Authorities are investigating a South Side Chicago funeral home after more than 50 bodies were found improperly stored and in various stages of decomposition. The discovery was made Thursday after nearby residents had reportedly complained for months about a strong odor coming from the building. Illinois officials suspended funeral director Johanna Morgan‘s license, citing unrefrigerated remains, rodent infestation and maggots. No arrests or criminal charges had been announced, while Chicago police and state agencies continued their investigations.

Discovery follows neighborhood odor complaints

State and local officials alerted the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office to conditions at South Chicago Chapel on Chicago’s South Side. Investigators and forensic pathologists who went to the funeral home Thursday found more than 50 remains improperly stored in different stages of decomposition. The discovery followed complaints from nearby residents, who said a strong odor had been coming from the property for months.

Workers were seen loading bodies into a vehicle outside the funeral home Friday as officials began removing and processing the remains. Chicago police said detectives were investigating the circumstances, but authorities had not announced arrests or filed charges.

Officials assess identities and condition of remains

The medical examiner’s office said staff were examining the conditions of the remains and looking for records that could establish the identities of the deceased. Officials were also searching for death certificates and other documentation needed to determine the proper disposition of each person.

“This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition.”

The examination process is intended to establish which remains were being handled by the funeral home, confirm identification and coordinate the next steps with families and authorities. Officials have not released the identities of the deceased or explained how long each body had been kept at the facility.

State suspends funeral director’s license

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation temporarily suspended Johanna Morgan‘s funeral director’s license on Wednesday. The agency said the suspension was necessary because her continued practice posed “a danger to the public safety, interest and welfare.”

According to the agency, multiple decedents were kept in an unrefrigerated area under deplorable conditions. Officials cited rodents and maggots and said the lack of refrigeration caused the bodies to decompose. The allegations concern the operation of South Chicago Chapel and remain part of the broader state and local investigation.

Business records show prior regulatory concerns

State business records show that Johanna Morgan incorporated South Chicago Chapel Inc. in 2022. The funeral home is operated by Johanna Morgan and her husband, Clark Morgan, whom state officials identify as the company’s president.

Clark Morgan‘s funeral director’s license was revoked in 2024 after state officials cited practice with an expired license and unprofessional conduct. Authorities have also said the couple previously operated a crematory that was shut down over the mishandling of remains.

Families face uncertainty as investigation continues

The discovery has created immediate uncertainty for families whose relatives were entrusted to the funeral home. Latasha Johnson, 55, said her mother’s funeral took place at South Chicago Chapel Thursday, shortly before authorities arrived and discovered the conditions.

Johnson said authorities told her that her mother’s body would need to undergo an autopsy and that she would have to identify the remains within the following days. She described herself as overwhelmed by the situation.

“I’m discombobulated. My heart is broken.”

Officials have not provided a final timeline for identifying all of the remains or completing their transfer. Investigators are continuing to review records, death certificates and the funeral home’s handling practices.
