Two Dead, Several Injured After Explosions at Toledo Recycling Facility

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 19, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Two workers were killed and several others suffered minor injuries after two explosions struck an industrial recycling facility in Toledo, Ohio, shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The blasts triggered a large fire, damaged much of the building and sent thick black smoke over the surrounding area. Firefighters found a male and a female employee dead inside the facility, while officials said two or three other workers were hurt. The cause of the explosions remained unknown as the fire continued into the afternoon.

Emergency crews faced hazardous materials, contaminated runoff and the possibility of further explosions while searching the building and accounting for employees. Environmental officials said air monitoring found no hazardous threat, but residents who could see or smell smoke were advised to leave the area and keep windows and doors closed.

Fatal explosions during a shift change

The explosions occurred shortly before 5 a.m. at Brent Industries in Toledo during a shift change, according to Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong. The workers who died were inside the heavily damaged facility when firefighters reached the building. Officials identified the victims as one male and one female employee, but did not release their names.

Two or three other workers sustained minor injuries. The incident involved an industrial recycling operation operated by Alabama-based Brent Industries, a company that provides textile reconditioning and industrial recycling services.

Extensive damage and a prolonged fire

The blasts caused severe structural damage across the Toledo facility. Aerial images showed that nearly the entire roof had been destroyed and that several walls had been blown outward. Fire crews surrounded the building as flames consumed portions of the site.

The fire was still burning Tuesday afternoon, hours after the initial explosions. The scale of the damage complicated the search for victims and required firefighters to work cautiously around unstable sections of the building and possible sources of additional combustion.

Hazardous-material concerns and public guidance

Firefighters initially treated the scene as a hazardous-material emergency because of chemical products and runoff at the facility. Officials also faced the risk that additional explosions could occur while crews searched for employees and worked to control the fire.

The facility uses mineral spirits in its cleaning process, and fire officials said tanks containing the petroleum-based solvent were located at the Toledo site. Their role in the explosions had not been established. Environmental monitoring detected no hazardous threat in the air, but authorities urged nearby residents who could see or smell smoke to stay away and keep their windows and doors closed.

Witnesses describe the force of the blasts

The explosions were powerful enough to be felt beyond the immediate facility. Demetrius Langston, who was about half a mile away, said the shock waves moved down the block and that he felt the second blast after hearing it.

“The shock waves came down the block,” Langston said. “Then we all heard it again. Boom! You could feel it.”

Video from the scene showed flames rising from the industrial property while firefighting crews worked around the perimeter. The smoke was visible across the area as emergency responders addressed the fire and the structural hazards inside.

Cause remains under investigation

Officials said there were no preliminary indications of what caused the explosions. Investigators will need to determine whether the blasts involved the mineral spirits, another material used at the facility or a separate mechanical or operational failure.

The company has previously faced a deadly industrial accident and safety violations. In 2015, an explosion at its Alabama plant killed one worker after mineral-spirit vapors ignited inside a washing machine. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration later cited the company for six violations and imposed a $27,000 fine. No connection between that incident and the Toledo explosions had been established.

Summary
