Burning Man Murder Case Remains Unsolved One Year After Fatal Stabbing

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 2, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

One year after Vadim Kruglov was found fatally stabbed at Burning Man in Nevada, investigators have made no arrest and the case remains unsolved. Kruglov was discovered inside a red-and-white tent on Aug. 30, 2025, as festivalgoers gathered for the annual burning of the Man. Authorities believe he was killed inside the tent, but they have not accounted for his movements during the final hours of his life. New details include the condition of the body, evidence recovered from the weapon and accounts of Kruglov’s behavior before the killing.

Evidence from the crime scene

Kruglov, 37, was born in Omsk, Siberia, and had been living in Washington state. He was found at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 30, 2025, in a pool of blood inside a tent at Black Rock City, the temporary community established for Burning Man in Pershing County. Investigators have said they believe the fatal attack occurred inside the tent where his body was located.

The knife remained lodged in Kruglov’s neck, and an autopsy found no defensive wounds. Investigators said those findings indicate that he may have had little or no opportunity to resist. The weapon was recovered at the scene and produced several DNA profiles, although authorities have not publicly identified a suspect from that evidence. His cellphone was also recovered but had not been unlocked during a previous investigator interview.

“When you get stabbed in the manner that he was, you’re going to be out in seconds,” Pershing County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Carmichael said.

The unexplained final hours

The central gap in the timeline covers roughly four hours on the day Kruglov died. Black Rock Rangers, festival volunteers who assist people on the grounds, reportedly took him to Rampart, a temporary medical facility, where he received care for much of the day. He was released at about 5 p.m., but investigators have not publicly established where he went afterward or who he encountered before he was found at about 9:14 p.m.

Earlier, at approximately 2 a.m., Kruglov was reportedly seen DJing with two men at a camp on the outskirts of the festival, near the area where his body was later discovered. Authorities have not identified those men despite receiving hundreds of tips. Their identities and potential connection to Kruglov’s final hours remain among the case’s unresolved questions.

Accounts of Kruglov’s behavior

Friends and campmates told investigators and reporters that Kruglov displayed increasingly troubling behavior in the days before his death. They said he became paranoid after using cocaine and what may have been methamphetamine, and at one point expressed fears that people were watching him and wanted him removed from the camp.

Alex Barnov, a campmate, said he believed the paranoia was drug-induced and that Kruglov appeared well after sleeping the following day. Another campmate said Kruglov was focused on Aug. 29 on getting an Apple AirTag to work so other people could track him, although the remote desert setting made the device difficult to use. These accounts have not explained who killed him or established whether his earlier concerns were connected to the homicide.

Discovery at the desert festival

The killing occurred as tens of thousands of participants gathered for the signature burning of the Man, the central event of the annual art and music festival. Burning Man draws as many as 80,000 people to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, creating a large and difficult-to-search temporary environment. The homicide was described by investigators as the first known killing in the event’s history.

A man initially alerted a deputy after finding Kruglov on the ground. Authorities secured the location and established a perimeter while festival activities continued nearby. A witness later said an older woman in a red dress flagged down departing festivalgoers and calmly reported that a man inside her tent was bleeding and might be dead. The group contacted a Black Rock Ranger through Starlink, and the information was passed to law enforcement.

The continuing investigation

Kruglov was identified days later through fingerprints by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. His father, Igor Kruglov, appealed for justice in an emotional video released from Russia and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable.

“Words can’t express my feelings. I’m proud of my son, now known worldwide. He felt injustice deeply and fought for fairness always. I believe a similar situation occurred here. I want those responsible to face consequences,” Igor Kruglov said.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office has asked anyone with information about the killing, Kruglov’s movements or the people he was seen with to come forward. With no arrest announced a year after the crime, investigators still face the task of connecting physical evidence, digital information and witness accounts into a reliable timeline.
