O.J. Simpson Accomplice Claims Renew Calls for Investigation

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 19, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Unsealed court documents have revived questions about whether O.J. Simpson may have had help in the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Former Simpson defense attorney Alan Dershowitz said the claims appear plausible and should be investigated. Simpson friend Charlie Ehrlich also said he believes a second person may have been involved, while acknowledging that he does not know the person’s identity. No one has been charged as an accomplice, and forensic pathologist Michael Baden said there was no scientific evidence of more than one attacker.

Unsealed documents renew questions about a possible accomplice

The renewed debate centers on information described in a report based on unsealed court documents. The material concerns Joseph Ippolito, a former cigarette boat racer, drug trafficker and restaurateur who knew Simpson and was close to Al Cowlings, the former NFL player who drove the white Ford Bronco during Simpson’s slow-speed flight from police in Los Angeles on June 17, 1994.

The murders occurred on June 12, 1994, outside Nicole Brown Simpson‘s home in Los Angeles. Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, a restaurant waiter, were killed. Simpson was acquitted in the criminal trial but found liable in a separate civil case. The new claims do not change those outcomes and have not resulted in an accomplice charge.

A jailhouse informant’s claims involve a missing weapon

According to the reported documents, Ippolito secretly became a jailhouse informant and told federal prosecutors he had information about efforts to dispose of evidence. His account potentially involved the murder weapon, which was never recovered.

Ippolito’s brother, Sam Ippolito, said Joseph came home on the night of the killings carrying a heavy bag and appearing to have blood on his hands. Sam said his brother claimed to have discarded the bag in a dumpster on Doheny Drive in Los Angeles. The account was later followed by a request for payment and a recantation, leaving its reliability disputed.

Dershowitz calls for the evidence to be reviewed

Alan Dershowitz, who served on Simpson’s defense team during the criminal trial, said the claims were sufficiently plausible to warrant further examination. He argued that investigators should revisit the evidence rather than assume existing conclusions answer every question.

“I think we ought to start from scratch and look at this evidence anew and see if there is credible evidence of a second person,” Alan Dershowitz said.

Dershowitz said he had long viewed it as difficult for one person to kill two people, dispose of evidence and complete other actions known to investigators. Simpson died in 2024, while Ippolito died in 2006, limiting the possibility of questioning either man directly.

Simpson friend supports the possibility of a second person

Charlie Ehrlich, who had known Ippolito since 1971 and later became close to Simpson, said he believes another person may have been involved. Ehrlich did not identify anyone and rejected online speculation that he himself was the possible accomplice.

“In my mind, there is a secondary guy. Who? I have no clue. But I believe, in my mind, there is,” Charlie Ehrlich said.

Ehrlich said he did not meet Simpson until after Simpson moved to Florida following the trial, but the two later became close and spent most weekends together. He said he did not know whether Simpson committed the killings. Ehrlich was previously charged in connection with Simpson’s 2007 Las Vegas memorabilia robbery case, but he has not been charged in the Brown Simpson and Goldman killings.

Forensic evidence does not establish multiple attackers

Michael Baden, a forensic pathologist hired by Simpson’s defense who worked with Henry Lee to evaluate autopsy findings, said he was not involved in examining whether someone assisted after the killings. He said the autopsy and crime-scene evidence showed that the same weapon was used against Brown Simpson and Goldman.

“There was no scene, autopsy [or] scientific evidence of more than one attacker,” Michael Baden said.

Authorities have not charged Cowlings, Ippolito or any other Simpson associate in connection with the killings. The allegations remain unproven and must be weighed against the existing physical evidence and the later recantation.

Key Points
Number Key Point
1 The killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman occurred on June 12, 1994.
2 Claims involving Joseph Ippolito include an alleged heavy bag, apparent blood and information about a missing weapon.
3 Alan Dershowitz said the allegations merit a fresh review.
4 No accomplice has been charged, and the claims remain unproven.

Summary

Freshly reported allegations have reopened discussion about whether a second person may have assisted in the 1994 murders. Dershowitz and Ehrlich support investigating that possibility, but the account includes a later recantation and has not produced criminal charges. Baden said the physical and autopsy evidence does not indicate more than one attacker, leaving the claims unresolved.
