Former DACA Recipient Accused in Iwo Jima Monument Attack Near Quantico

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 22, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A 27-year-old Mexican national and former Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient has been arrested after an Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico was allegedly attacked with a sledgehammer. Authorities say one Marine figure’s head was removed and other parts of the limestone sculpture were damaged. The estimated repair cost is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The suspect is being held without bond while the case proceeds.

Prince William County police responded to the monument at about 10:13 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Officers allegedly found Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano striking the sculpture and arrested him at the scene. He faces felony charges related to property destruction, trespassing and injury to a monument.

Federal sources said Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally in December 1999 and received DACA protection in 2014. His status was extended in 2024 but was not renewed in August 2026.

Arrest follows alleged sledgehammer attack

Prince William County police responded to the limestone monument near the entrance to Marine Corps Base Quantico at approximately 10:13 p.m. on October 21. According to authorities, officers arrived while Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano was allegedly using a sledgehammer against the sculpture. He was arrested after officers assessed the extensive damage.

The monument is located near the National Museum of the Marine Corps in northern Virginia. Police said the attack caused significant damage, with the estimated repair bill reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Monument damage affects several figures

Authorities said the attack completely removed the head of one Marine figure. Images released by police showed the figure on the far right without a head, while another Marine had gouges across the helmet and face.

A third figure sustained damage to a bayonet attached to a rifle slung across his back. The damaged elements are part of a group depicting Marines raising the American flag, making the incident both a property crime investigation and damage to a monument honoring military service.

Statue commemorates the Battle of Iwo Jima

The damaged sculpture is a nine-foot limestone representation of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. The event became one of the most recognizable images associated with the United States Marine Corps.

The statue was sculpted by Felix de Weldon, who later created the larger bronze Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The Quantico monument stands within an installation that has served as a center for Marine Corps training and education for generations.

Suspect’s immigration and DACA history

Federal sources said Maldonado Soriano, a Mexican national, crossed into the United States illegally in December 1999. He was granted DACA protection by the Obama administration in 2014, and the protection was extended by the Biden administration in 2024.

According to the same sources, his DACA status was not renewed by the Trump administration and ended in August 2026. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, provides qualifying individuals who arrived in the United States as children with temporary protection from deportation and work authorization, subject to program rules.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers criticized the alleged attack in a statement and connected the case to the administration’s immigration policies.

“This criminal illegal alien’s dream is over: Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice,” Rogers said.

Charges and case status

Maldonado Soriano was charged with felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property and felony injury to a monument. The charges relate to the alleged conduct at the Quantico-area statue and remain allegations unless established in court.

He is being held without bond. Authorities had not announced a court date at the time of the report. The investigation and any repair assessment will determine the next steps in the criminal case and restoration of the monument.
