Arlington County Approves $50,000 Aid Program for Families Affected by ICE Detentions

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 8, 2026 U.S. News 4 Mins Read

Arlington County, Virginia, has approved $50,000 in emergency assistance for families whose primary wage earner was detained by federal immigration authorities. Eligible households may receive up to $2,000 through Arlington Thrive, a local nonprofit that works with the county government. The program is expected to assist between 25 and 30 families. The decision followed a month in which immigration authorities reported more than 1,300 arrests in the Washington, D.C., suburbs.

County approves emergency assistance

The Arlington County Board voted 4-0 during a special meeting on September 2 to appropriate $50,000 for families affected by the detention of a primary wage earner. The funding will be administered by Arlington Thrive in partnership with the county government. County leaders said the measure was intended to provide emergency support to residents facing a sudden loss of household income.

Eligibility and payment details

Families may qualify when a primary wage earner has been detained by federal immigration authorities. Arlington Thrive plans to provide as much as $2,000 per eligible household, with the available funding expected to reach approximately 25 to 30 families. Payments will be issued through debit cards and checks, according to county information presented with the program.

Officials describe the program’s purpose

Board Chair Matt de Ferranti said the county was standing with immigrant families and responding to the disruption caused when household providers are detained or removed. Vice Chair Maureen Coffey said emergency assistance was necessary for residents confronting an exceptionally difficult situation.

“We stand with our immigrant families, and we will not stop doing so,” Matt de Ferranti said.

The program’s stated purpose is to help households manage immediate expenses while the primary wage earner is unavailable. It does not change federal immigration proceedings or detention decisions.

Aid follows increased immigration enforcement

The county action came after a reported increase in federal immigration enforcement across the Washington, D.C., area. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers made more than 1,300 arrests in the suburbs over a 14-day period in August, according to the reported enforcement figures. Nearly 400 of those arrested had criminal convictions or pending criminal charges, with allegations involving crimes including rape, kidnapping, robbery, driving under the influence and attempted murder.

The county’s decision was presented as a local response to the financial consequences for families, rather than as an assessment of individual immigration cases.

Distribution is ready to begin

Elizabeth Matlock, a staff member in the county manager’s office coordinating the effort, said Arlington Thrive was prepared to start issuing the assistance. The organization describes itself as part of the local social safety net and will handle the practical distribution of funds after eligible families are identified.

“Thrive is eager to get started with this project,” Elizabeth Matlock said.

Key Points
