Coast Guard Seizes 47 Marijuana Bales Worth $2.4 Million

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 4, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

The U.S. Coast Guard recovered 47 bales of suspected marijuana valued at more than $2.4 million after intercepting a suspicious go-fast vessel during a patrol. The bales weighed a combined 2,082 pounds and were found along the vessel’s previous route. Four people were detained in connection with the operation, officials said. The seizure comes as U.S. authorities continue targeting maritime narcotics trafficking networks across the Western Hemisphere.

The operation involved the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba, the Joint Interagency Task Force South and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Haiti. Officials did not disclose the location of the interception, but said the vessel stopped without further incident.

Coast Guard detects a suspicious vessel

The incident began during a routine patrol when the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba detected what officials described as a suspicious go-fast vessel. A Coast Guard boat crew was launched to investigate and pursue the vessel. The boat eventually stopped without further incident, according to the Joint Interagency Task Force South.

The interception was carried out as part of maritime enforcement efforts directed at suspected narcotics trafficking. Officials did not identify the vessel’s crew or provide details about the vessel’s registration, departure point or intended destination.

Bales recovered along the vessel’s route

During follow-on operations, Coast Guard crews located what officials called a bale field along the vessel’s prior track. They recovered 47 bales of suspected marijuana from the waterway. The cargo weighed 2,082 pounds, or more than one ton, and was estimated to be worth over $2.4 million.

The recovery indicates that the suspected shipment was found after the vessel had traveled through the area. Officials did not state whether the bales had been thrown overboard during the pursuit or explain how they became separated from the vessel. The investigation remained active based on the available information.

“This mission required vigilance, professionalism, and seamless coordination from detection and pursuit to evidence recovery and search-and-rescue support,” the task force said.

Four people detained after the interception

Four people were detained in connection with the operation, officials said. The individuals were taken into custody after the vessel was stopped, although authorities did not announce charges, nationalities or the next legal steps.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center Haiti was also credited with providing timely support, search assistance and coordination during the operation. No injuries or damage were reported in the account of the interception, and officials said the vessel stopped without further incident.

Operation reflects broader regional campaign

The seizure is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration and U.S. Southern Command to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks operating in the Western Hemisphere. Southern Command described the operation as evidence of U.S. efforts to prevent dangerous drugs from reaching the United States.

The command has also reported operations in the Eastern Pacific involving vessels it said were connected to Los Choneros, which it described as a violent narco-terrorist organization. The broader campaign has included maritime interdictions and strikes against vessels that U.S. officials say are linked to suspected narco-trafficking activity.

“The bust is another demonstration of the United States’ resolve to stop the flow of dangerous drugs into the homeland,” Southern Command said.

Seizure follows a major Puerto Rico drug bust

The latest recovery follows another major Coast Guard operation off Puerto Rico last month. In that case, authorities intercepted a suspected smuggling boat nearly 50 miles from the U.S. territory and found more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine.

That shipment was estimated to be worth about $54.5 million, and five people aboard the vessel were detained. Together, the cases illustrate the continued use of maritime routes to move large quantities of narcotics and the ongoing enforcement response in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.

Summary

The Coast Guard’s recovery of more than one ton of suspected marijuana followed the interception of a suspicious go-fast vessel during a patrol. It also forms part of a wider U.S. effort to disrupt maritime narcotics trafficking in the Western Hemisphere.
