Florida Teen Charged as Adult in Alleged Homemade Firearms Robbery Plot

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 8, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Julian Davis, a 14-year-old Florida middle school student, was arrested and charged as an adult after authorities allegedly found homemade firearms, suspected explosive components and evidence of a planned robbery. Investigators said Davis and a 13-year-old friend exchanged messages about holding someone at gunpoint and discussed making weapons. The case emerged after a tip was submitted through Florida’s school threat-reporting system. Officials said there was no direct threat against the students’ middle school, but authorities believe the investigation may have prevented a broader tragedy.

Investigation begins with a school safety tip

The investigation began April 27 after St. Johns County sheriff’s deputies received information about messages exchanged by Davis and his 13-year-old friend. The boys attended Switzerland Point Middle School in St. Johns County, Florida. According to an arrest report, the messages referred to holding someone at gunpoint and robbing that person, identified in the conversation only as “CJ.” Investigators have not determined who CJ is.

The information was initially submitted to FortifyFL, a reporting platform established after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting to flag potential threats involving students. Deputies and federal agents then conducted searches between April 27 and April 30. The sheriff’s office and federal investigators publicly discussed the case for the first time at a Friday news conference.

Searches uncover homemade weapons and materials

Authorities said searches of Davis’s home found three homemade firearms, ammunition, suspected explosive components and makeshift handcuffs. Investigators also recovered handwritten notes that appeared to describe weapon construction and a drawing resembling a Molotov cocktail. Photos released by the sheriff’s department showed homemade shotguns, a homemade pistol and brass knuckles.

The materials were cited in support of multiple firearms and explosives charges. The reported messages also contained references to building a shotgun and a musket, as well as obtaining zip ties. The allegations remain subject to court proceedings, and Davis has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities examine possible broader motives

Robert Hardwick, the St. Johns County sheriff, said investigators found indications that the alleged robbery plan might not have been the full scope of the boys’ activities. Searches reportedly uncovered a tactical vest containing white supremacist drawings, a copy of the manifesto written by Brenton Tarrant, and books containing weapons and explosives-related material.

“He was actually spending a lot of his time on there going through these high-profile cases. And it’s something that he actually wanted to emulate.”

Hardwick said Davis had researched mass school shootings and mass stabbings online and described the teenager as having an intense fixation on those cases. The sheriff said the evidence presented “a much bigger picture than just a robbery,” while authorities have not announced a direct threat against the school.

Charges and custody status

Davis was arrested April 30 and charged as an adult with multiple firearms and explosives offenses. He and his younger friend were also charged with conspiracy to commit a robbery with a firearm. The 13-year-old was not charged as an adult and was not publicly identified.

Davis remains in the St. Johns County Jail on a $240,000 bond, according to the sheriff. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for another arraignment next month after additional charges were filed. His 13-year-old friend spent 21 days in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice before being released.

School response and next steps

Neither student will be permitted to return to Switzerland Point Middle School. District officials said the school itself was not the target of a direct threat. Paul Abbatinozzi, the St. Johns County School District’s deputy superintendent, clarified that authorities had not identified a direct threat to the campus.

The criminal case will now proceed through the court system as investigators and prosecutors address the additional charges. Authorities have not established who the alleged robbery target was or announced further details about a planned attack. The case also underscores the role of school reporting systems in bringing potentially dangerous conduct to law enforcement’s attention.

Summary

The Florida case involves serious allegations against a middle school student, including planning an armed robbery and possessing homemade firearms and suspected explosive materials.
