Corie A. Walsh, 38, is facing three counts of first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son, Barrett Walsh, was found dead at a home in Frankfort, Illinois. Court documents allege Walsh had discussed the Lindsay Clancy murder trial with friends hours before the child was discovered. Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, previously represented Casey Anthony and says Walsh was psychotic at the time of the alleged killing. Prosecutors are seeking to keep Walsh in custody, while the defense challenges the charges and considers further legal options.

Charges and the death of Barrett Walsh

Walsh has been charged in Will County Circuit Court with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her son, Barrett. The toddler was found at the family’s home in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court in Frankfort shortly after 4 p.m. on September 1. A preliminary autopsy determined that Barrett died from asphyxia caused by strangulation.

The charges are based on separate legal theories outlined by prosecutors. Because Barrett was 2 years old, a conviction could carry a mandatory sentence of 60 to 100 years in prison without the possibility of early release. Walsh has not been convicted, and the case remains pending.

Police response and condition of the other children

Frankfort police were called after a neighbor reported an injured child. According to the court filing, the neighbor found Barrett hanging from a basement rafter with his feet off the ground, brought him down and began CPR while calling 911. The neighbor told investigators that the boy was cold and had no pulse. Barrett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walsh’s three other children were unharmed. They included an infant who was inside the home and two school-aged children who returned around the time Barrett was discovered. Walsh’s husband was traveling out of state and returned that evening. Officers also went upstairs after being told Walsh was attempting to harm herself. The filing states that she was found in a bathtub surrounded by bloody water, with injuries to her wrists and thighs, after a neighbor took a knife from her.

Statements and alleged interest in the Clancy case

Prosecutors allege that Walsh later told officers she killed Barrett because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” The filing also says she referred to the child by his nickname, “Bear,” while speaking with the neighbor. Investigators said statements Walsh made while hospitalized described how the toddler died and were consistent with physical evidence.

Witnesses told police that Walsh had recently become highly interested in the murder trial involving Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children. Court documents state that Walsh discussed that case in a group text message with friends as recently as 12:30 p.m. on September 1, about three and a half hours before Barrett was found. The documents do not allege that the discussion caused or was connected to Barrett’s death. Walsh’s cellphone was recovered from the bathroom, and forensic analysis was still underway as of September 3.

“They are not correlated at all. It’s just accidental,” Lyon said, calling suggestions that Walsh’s actions were a copycat crime “baseless and cruel.”

Defense strategy and detention proceedings

Lyon said Walsh was psychotic and that the defense will challenge the first-degree murder allegations. Lyon previously represented Anthony, who was acquitted in 2011 of charges related to the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was convicted of lying to law enforcement but was found not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse.

Walsh remains hospitalized at Silver Cross Hospital while recovering from her injuries. At a Tuesday detention hearing, a judge denied her request for pretrial release to a locked hospital setting. Lyon said the defense was disappointed, would continue investigating the case and might seek release again. Prosecutors argue that Walsh presents a real and present threat to her husband and surviving children.

Potential sentence and next steps

The legal proceedings will continue in Will County. Walsh is expected to be transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility once she is medically released. The prosecution’s request for continued detention will remain a central issue as the case develops, while the defense evaluates whether Walsh’s mental state affects the charges and potential trial strategy.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office had not immediately responded to a request for comment. The allegations remain unproven unless established in court, and the case is subject to further hearings, evidence review and possible additional defense motions.
