Lindsay Clancy Mistrial: Holdout Juror Says Evidence Supported Conviction

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 14, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Michael Desronvil, the lone holdout juror in the murder trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, says he had substantial evidence supporting a conviction. Desronvil rejected claims from fellow jurors that he had acknowledged reasonable doubt but still refused to support a verdict finding Clancy not criminally responsible. The 12-person jury deadlocked on Sept. 4, prompting the court to declare a mistrial. The next steps in the case remain unresolved as attorneys pursue separate requests concerning the jury’s conduct and records.

Holdout juror rejects claims of reasonable doubt

In a televised interview on Wednesday, Oct. 14, Michael Desronvil said he did not have reasonable doubt during deliberations. He also said he had “a lot of evidence” supporting his position, while declining to describe that evidence in detail. Desronvil said he was withholding specifics out of respect for the other jurors and the court process while the case continues.

“I had a lot of evidence to back up my claim,” Michael Desronvil said.

The juror has previously said that public attention should remain focused on Clancy’s three children rather than on him. His attorney, Heather O’Connor, has represented him as criticism of his role in the deadlocked verdict has increased.

What the jury decided during deliberations

The trial involved the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. Prosecutors alleged that Clancy strangled the children one by one with exercise bands and understood that her conduct was wrong.

During deliberations, Desronvil was the only one of the 12 jurors who voted to convict. The other 11 supported a finding that Clancy was not criminally responsible because of mental disease or defect. The disagreement prevented the panel from reaching a unanimous verdict, and the trial ended in a mistrial on Sept. 4, 2026.

Defense seeks an inquiry into the juror

Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, has called for an inquiry into Desronvil’s conduct and described him as an “obstructionist.” The defense has asked Judge William Sullivan to preserve records involving the 12 jurors and six alternates.

The requested materials include juror questionnaires, supplemental filings, probation records, cellphone sign-in sheets and surveillance video from the courthouse hallway outside the deliberation room. The defense also seeks Desronvil’s questionnaire, certain registry records and information about whether prosecutors had contact with him as a defendant, complainant or subject since January 2021. Another request seeks his phone records during deliberation hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on each deliberation day.

Mistrial leaves the case unresolved

The court declared the mistrial after jurors indicated they could not reach a verdict. A hearing on the defense motion seeking an inquiry into the holdout juror was postponed after Desronvil retained a Massachusetts attorney.

The defense has also filed a motion seeking dismissal on double-jeopardy grounds. The requests could affect how prosecutors and the court proceed, but the available information does not establish whether a retrial will occur or when further proceedings will be scheduled.

Competing accounts of Clancy’s mental state

The prosecution argued that Clancy acted deliberately and knew that killing her children was wrong. Prosecutors pointed to the sequence of the deaths and the use of exercise bands as evidence supporting criminal responsibility.

The defense argued that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis and had repeatedly sought help without receiving adequate relief. On that account, her mental disease or defect meant she was not criminally responsible. The sharply different interpretations of her mental state formed the central issue before the jury and led to the divide that produced the mistrial.
