Mississippi Child Exploitation Crackdown Leads to 70 Arrests

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 5, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Federal, state and local authorities arrested 70 people during a two-week Mississippi operation targeting child exploitation and previously convicted sex offenders. Officials said the arrests involved allegations including online contact with minors, trafficking in child sexual abuse material and illicit travel across state lines. The operation also helped rescue one child from an alleged sextortion scheme in progress. Authorities said the investigation demonstrates the importance of cooperation among agencies working to protect children online and in local communities.

Several of those arrested were identified by federal officials as undocumented immigrants, while others were U.S. citizens. All allegations remain subject to court proceedings, and an arrest does not establish guilt.

Statewide operation produces 70 arrests

Operation Muddy Waters was conducted across Mississippi over a two-week period in a coordinated effort involving federal, state and local agencies. The operation focused on people accused of exploiting children and on previously convicted sex offenders alleged to have violated registration or compliance requirements. Officials said the cases ranged from online communications with minors to alleged movement across state lines for illicit sexual conduct.

The arrests took place as investigators pursued leads involving communities and online platforms. Authorities described the operation as a broad enforcement effort designed to identify offenders, protect potential victims and bring charges through the appropriate courts.

Officials detail allegations involving minors

Federal officials said the investigation included allegations that some suspects contacted minors through social media, sought sexual encounters or requested explicit images. One case involved an alleged sextortion scheme that was still in progress when investigators intervened, officials said. A child was saved through the operation, according to the Mississippi attorney general.

“The most important number coming from this operation is the one child victim that was saved from a sextortion scheme in progress,” the attorney general said in a statement. “The work done in this operation made all the difference to this child and to countless others who are a little safer online right now.”

Other allegations involved the exchange of child sexual abuse material and communications with children as young as 14. Authorities have not indicated that every arrest involved the same conduct, and the allegations will be addressed separately through the legal process.

Authorities identify several defendants

Officials identified Cristian Abel Argueta Giron, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, as a suspect accused of traveling from Tennessee to Mississippi to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor. Rahul Mondal, an undocumented immigrant from Bangladesh who was in the United States on a student visa at the University of Alabama, was accused of communicating with a 14-year-old boy through social media.

Jose Arevalo Garcia, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, was described as a noncompliant sex offender previously convicted of sexual assault in 2010. Enrique Bravo Gonzalez, also identified as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, was described as a noncompliant sex offender previously convicted of a felony sexual offense against a child in 2022.

Officials also identified U.S. citizens Justin Tyler Scott and Yves Jean Baptiste Cook. Scott was accused of communicating with a 14-year-old boy through social media to arrange sex. Cook was accused of communicating with a 14-year-old girl, sending masturbation videos and requesting nude images.

Interagency partnership supports child protection

The operation involved the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for Mississippi’s Northern and Southern Districts, the state attorney general’s office, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Marshals Service. Sheriff’s offices in Marshall, DeSoto, Harrison, Pearl River and Forrest counties also participated, along with the Oxford Police Department and other partners.

Officials said the partnership allowed investigators to combine federal resources, local intelligence and state enforcement capabilities. That structure was intended to locate suspects, identify vulnerable children and support cases involving conduct that crossed jurisdictional boundaries.

Officials emphasize ongoing enforcement

Matthew Reidell, assistant special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Gulfport, said offenders who use computers to conceal their conduct would continue to be pursued. He said the operation reflected a commitment to protecting children, supporting victims and holding alleged offenders accountable.

“Those who choose to hide behind a computer screen to exploit children will not remain hidden,” Reidell said.

Authorities said the investigation and related prosecutions will continue. The arrests underscore the risks children face through online contact, while officials urged continued cooperation among agencies and communities to prevent further abuse.
