Missouri Neighbor Accused in Fatal Shooting of Mother and Teen Daughter

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 6, 2026 U.S. News 4 Mins Read

A Missouri man is accused of fatally shooting a mother and her teenage daughter inside their House Springs home after confronting the family over an ongoing neighborhood dispute. Authorities said Robert Winkelman, 73, shot Jessica Lashly, 38, and her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, on July 25. Both victims died days later at a local hospital, while Winkelman died after turning the gun on himself when deputies confronted him.

Investigators said the confrontation was linked to Winkelman’s frustrations about activities at Lashly’s home, including reported noise. He would have faced two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The confrontation at the House Springs home

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Winkelman walked from his home to Lashly’s residence in House Springs, Missouri, on July 25. Investigators said he confronted Lashly about what was happening at the property. A sheriff’s office spokesperson described the incident as a dispute between neighbors, while investigators reported that Winkelman had ongoing frustrations with activities at Lashly’s home.

Reports identified noise as an initial subject of the complaint. The encounter escalated after Lashly responded to Winkelman, authorities said. The available account does not indicate that the dispute involved any prior physical confrontation before the shooting.

The shooting and victims’ deaths

Police said Winkelman pulled out a gun and shot Lashly in the head during the confrontation. When her daughter Jersey tried to help her mother, investigators said Winkelman shot the teenager in the head as well. A third person was chased by Winkelman while he was armed, but that person was not shot.

Lashly and Jersey were taken to a local hospital, where both died days after the July 25 attack. Lashly was a single mother who supported her daughters, according to her surviving daughter, Justice Greer, Jersey’s twin sister.

Deputies’ response and expected charges

Deputies went to Winkelman’s home after the shooting and moved to confront him. Authorities said he then turned the gun on himself. He was taken to a hospital and died on August 2, according to investigators.

Because Winkelman died before prosecution, he did not face the charges investigators said would have been filed: two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. The sheriff’s office’s account identifies him as the alleged shooter and outlines the planned charges, but no criminal trial will take place.

Family and coaches remember the victims

Justice Greer described her twin sister as funny, supportive and attentive to people who were struggling. She said Jersey’s effort to protect their mother showed courage.

“Jersey’s last moments, she was trying to save my mom. It just shows how brave she is, and I hope I can be half as brave as she is,” Justice Greer said.

Justice also said the family had been centered on the three of them. A lacrosse coach, Abby Feldmann, said Jersey had a powerful effect on those around her and was widely admired by teammates and others who knew her.

“She could change your whole perspective on life,” Feldmann said.

The case’s unresolved questions

The incident left investigators with a fatal sequence that began with a neighbor’s complaint and ended with three deaths. Authorities have said the immediate motive was tied to Winkelman’s frustrations and the dispute at Lashly’s home, but the public account does not provide further detail about the activities that caused those frustrations.

The deaths also mean the allegations will not be tested in court. The surviving family and community are left to remember Lashly and Jersey while investigators’ description of the confrontation remains the principal account of what happened.
