Missouri Neighbor Accused in Fatal Shooting of Mother and Teen Daughter

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 6, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A Missouri mother and her teenage daughter died after a neighbor allegedly opened fire inside their House Springs home following a confrontation over an ongoing dispute. Investigators said Robert Winkelman, 73, walked to the home on July 25 and confronted Jessica Lashly, 38. Authorities said he shot Lashly and her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, before later turning the gun on himself. The victims died at a local hospital days after the shooting, while Winkelman died on August 2.

The confrontation at a House Springs home

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Winkelman walked from his home to the nearby residence of Lashly in House Springs, Missouri, on July 25. Investigators said he confronted Lashly about what was happening at her home. A sheriff’s office spokesman described the incident as a dispute between neighbors, while investigators said Winkelman had expressed ongoing frustrations about activities there.

Reports indicated that noise was among the issues Winkelman wanted to address. The encounter escalated after Lashly responded to him, authorities said. Police have not publicly described any additional details about the dispute beyond the reported confrontation and the subsequent gunfire.

The shooting and victims’ deaths

Investigators said Winkelman pulled out a firearm during the confrontation and shot Lashly in the head. When her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, attempted to help her mother, authorities said Winkelman shot Greer in the head as well. A third person was reportedly chased by Winkelman while he was armed but was not shot.

Lashly and Greer were taken to a local hospital, where both died several days later. Lashly was a single mother, according to her surviving daughter, Justice Greer. The circumstances described by investigators left the family and the House Springs community mourning two victims of the same alleged attack inside their home.

The suspect’s death and expected charges

Deputies went to Winkelman’s home after the shooting and moved to confront him, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said he then turned the gun on himself. He died at a local hospital on August 2, before prosecutors could bring the charges investigators said they were preparing.

The sheriff’s office said Winkelman would have faced two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. Because he died, those anticipated criminal proceedings will not take place. Investigators have continued documenting the events surrounding the July 25 shooting and the sequence that led to the deaths.

Family and community remember the victims

Justice Greer described her twin sister as exceptionally funny, supportive and attentive to other people’s emotions. She said Jersey could recognize when someone was sad and would try to encourage them. Justice also said her sister’s final actions showed bravery because she attempted to save their mother.

“Jersey’s last moments, she was trying to save my mom. It just shows how brave she is, and I hope I can be half as brave as she is,” Justice Greer said.

Justice said the family had largely consisted of the three of them and that losing both her mother and sister would be difficult. Abby Feldmann, who coached the twins in lacrosse, also remembered Jersey as someone whose character could influence the people around her and change their outlook on life.

The investigation and remaining questions

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is the agency that publicly outlined the alleged confrontation, the shootings and Winkelman’s death. The investigation identified the reported noise complaint and broader neighbor dispute as the context for the encounter, but officials have not released a fuller explanation of what caused the ongoing tensions.

Authorities have also not publicly identified the third person who was chased or provided further details about that person’s account. The available information establishes that the shooting occurred at Lashly’s home in House Springs, that both victims later died in hospital, and that the accused suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before the expected charges could be filed.
