Nancy Guthrie Neighborhood Searched Again After Monsoon Rains Shift Tucson Landscape

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 6, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood was reportedly searched again as authorities continue investigating her disappearance. A nearby resident said she saw investigators examining desert brush behind the 84-year-old’s home shortly before the case reached six months without answers. A Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said no task force investigators had recently returned, while the FBI had not immediately commented. A retired sheriff’s lieutenant said heavy monsoon rains may have altered the terrain and exposed or moved evidence.

Reported return to the Catalina Foothills

A neighbor living several doors from Nancy Guthrie’s residence said she recognized people connected to earlier law enforcement activity in the neighborhood. The resident reported seeing them search the brush behind the home in Tucson, Arizona, shortly before the disappearance reached the six-month mark.

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television host Savannah Guthrie, was taken by force from her home during the early hours of February 1, 2026. Other public references have placed the disappearance in early February. The circumstances remain unresolved, and the reported search has not been publicly tied to a specific discovery.

Why investigators may have revisited the area

Bob Krygier, a retired Pima County sheriff’s lieutenant and former SWAT commander, said a renewed search could reflect a credible tip, a newly identified area of interest or a fresh review by investigators who had not previously examined the location.

He said authorities may also return months later to apply a different investigative perspective. A search based on new information could be focused on a particular section of desert brush, while a broader review could seek evidence missed during earlier activity. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department disputed that its task force had recently returned, leaving the reported activity and its purpose unconfirmed.

“There’s a couple of different reasons that go through my mind. First is going to be they got some leads, they got some new tips that are viable, and they’re out there looking for something specific.”

Monsoon water changes the search landscape

Tucson’s monsoon season began about a month before the reported renewed search, bringing periods of heavy rainfall. Bob Krygier said sudden water flows can shift rocks, branches and other material, potentially changing areas that investigators previously examined.

He described washes and flood channels as capable of carrying substantial volumes of water. Depending on the location, floodwaters can rise from a few inches to as much as 12 feet, with enough force to move vehicles, trees, rocks and people. Some runoff eventually feeds into the Santa Cruz River, where water can become significantly deeper and wider during peak flows.

“Monsoon season started here in Tucson and a lot of water has come down. It pushes things, so it’s moved the environment.”

Investigation remains active

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators continue to follow active leads and review tens of thousands of videos. He said authorities do not consider the case cold, despite the passage of months without a public resolution.

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the reported search. Local authorities also did not immediately provide additional details. The absence of a confirmed return by the task force means the neighbor’s account has not been independently established by officials.

Public appeal and outstanding reward

Authorities have asked the public to help identify the person who allegedly sent two ransom notes released by the sheriff’s office. Officials said the notes could contain a distinctive linguistic style that may help identify their sender.

The combined reward in the case exceeds $1.2 million and remains unclaimed. Investigators continue to seek information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, and tipsters may remain anonymous when contacting the FBI or the Pima County crime tip line.
