A climber suffered serious injuries after falling 15 to 20 feet at Shortoff Mountain in North Carolina’s Linville Gorge on Sunday. Emergency crews rappelled to the injured person and requested whole blood to help stabilize the patient for transport. A rescue volunteer carried the blood approximately 1.5 miles uphill before a Black Hawk helicopter evacuated the climber to Charlotte. The operation involved about two dozen agencies from surrounding counties.

Fall during a climbing attempt

Emergency crews were called at about 2 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a fallen climber along a steep section of Shortoff Mountain in Linville Gorge. The climber, identified as Jacob Gregory in an online fundraiser, had been leading a climbing route and was attempting to place protection gear roughly 40 feet above a ledge.

According to a rescue account, the climber took a lead fall of approximately 15 to 20 feet. During the fall, the climber swung away from the climbing wall and struck a nearby rock pillar. The impact caused serious injuries and left the patient in difficult, steep terrain that complicated access for rescuers.

Ground crews reach the injured climber

Paramedics initially made their way to the patient by rappelling down the gorge. They assessed the injuries and began providing medical care while additional rescue resources were requested. The location required technical climbing and rope work because of the mountain’s steep and rugged layout.

The response focused on stabilizing the climber before removing the patient from the mountainside. Rescue officials coordinated medical, technical and transportation resources from multiple jurisdictions because a conventional ground evacuation would have been difficult and time-consuming in the remote area.

Volunteer carries whole blood uphill

Medical personnel requested whole blood to help stabilize the injured climber before transport. A Burke Rescue volunteer then ran approximately 1.5 miles uphill while carrying the blood to the treatment location.

The volunteer covered about 1,000 feet of elevation in 31 minutes, according to the rescue account. The delivery provided a critical medical resource while the patient remained on the mountain and crews prepared for an air evacuation.

“The lead climber was attempting to place gear approximately 40 feet above the ledge when they took a lead fall of approximately 15-20 feet, during which they swung away from the climbing wall and struck an adjacent rock pillar.”

Helicopter evacuation from rugged terrain

A North Carolina Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team Black Hawk helicopter was ultimately called to assist because of the steep, rugged terrain. The aircraft, identified as “Kill Devil 244,” lifted the climber from the mountain and transported the patient to Charlotte for medical treatment.

The operation involved two dozen agencies from surrounding counties. Their work included reaching the patient, delivering medical supplies, providing stabilization and coordinating the helicopter extraction. The rescue fundraiser described the response as a large-scale effort involving significant coordination and courage.

Rescue officials urge climbing preparedness

Rescue officials emphasized that climbing carries inherent risks and encouraged climbers to understand their abilities before attempting a route. They also urged participants to use appropriate equipment and make decisions suited to their experience and conditions.

The incident highlighted the challenges of responding to injuries in remote climbing areas. Technical rescue teams, medical responders, volunteers and aviation crews each played a role in moving the injured climber from the gorge to advanced medical care.
