Oklahoma Man Accused of Using Flamethrower During Eviction Response

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 28, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

An eviction response in Oklahoma City turned into a dangerous standoff after a 61-year-old tenant allegedly directed flames at deputies and a housing security officer. Body-camera footage released by the county sheriff’s office shows deputies retreating from the apartment as a burst of fire filled the doorway. Officers also found aerosol cans connected by bare wires to a car battery near the entrance. The man was later removed from the apartment in his wheelchair, and charges were filed out of custody.

The incident occurred shortly before noon on August 11, 2026, when deputies arrived to serve an eviction order. Authorities said the tenant, identified as Darron Dunn, had barricaded the entrance of an Oklahoma City apartment.

Deputies encounter a barricaded apartment

Deputies and Housing Authority personnel went to the Oklahoma City apartment on August 11 to carry out an eviction order. Housing Authority staff unlocked the door, but authorities said it would not open fully because cables and an electric wheelchair were positioned behind it. The apartment was described in the incident report as dark and cluttered.

Once deputies entered, one officer saw Darron Dunn seated in a bedroom. Authorities allege that Dunn immediately sprayed an aerosol can toward the deputy and a Housing Authority security officer before igniting it. The circumstances prompted officers to treat the entry as an active threat rather than a routine civil enforcement call.

Aerosol flames force officers to retreat

Body-camera footage shows a bright orange flash as the aerosol burst caught fire inside the doorway. The sheriff’s office said the flames traveled approximately 15 feet toward the deputy, who reported feeling extreme heat. Officers moved backward to escape the fire and warn others inside the building.

“Back up!” an officer yelled as deputies retreated.

The alleged device functioned as a makeshift flamethrower using an aerosol can and an ignition source. Authorities have not reported that any deputy or resident was injured by the flames in the incident account.

Wired devices trigger an emergency evacuation

As deputies withdrew, they saw a car battery with wires attached near Dunn and another wired device close to the front door. The incident report described rows of butane lighter-fluid and carburetor-cleaner aerosol cans taped together with bare wires.

The discovery led officers to evacuate residents from the third floor and nearby levels. A sheriff’s tactical team and bomb squad were called to the apartment because the wires and battery created a potential fire or explosive hazard.

“He’s got it hooked up to the battery!” one officer shouted. “Everybody out! Improvised device! Get out!” another officer warned.

Bomb technicians assess the device

Bomb technicians later disabled the wires connected to the aerosol cans and removed the device. According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, technicians determined that the arrangement was unlikely to explode in the configuration they found.

The spokesperson said the exposed wires could have sparked or generated heat if they touched a car-battery terminal, but technicians did not believe the device would detonate. After the hazard was addressed, officers safely removed Dunn from the apartment in his wheelchair.

Charges follow the confrontation

Dunn was taken to a VA hospital because of medical issues and stress and was later placed in a mental hospital, according to the incident report. Authorities filed charges out of custody for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possessing, using, manufacturing or threatening to use an incendiary device or explosives, and obstructing an officer.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson said eviction calls can be emotionally charged and that deputies sometimes encounter volatile reactions. The spokesperson also pointed to another eviction-related incident about a year earlier in which a man allegedly tried to set a deputy on fire before setting himself ablaze and dying.
