Penn State Cocaine Ring Suspects Seek Jury Trials as Cases Advance

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 30, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Five men accused of participating in an alleged cocaine distribution operation connected to Penn State have indicated they intend to plead not guilty. Three defendants requested jury trials, while two did not select a trial format in court documents. The defendants waived formal arraignment and are scheduled for a pretrial conference on Nov. 16 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Prosecutors allege the operation involved bulk cocaine purchases, fraternity-linked distribution and packaging inside a fraternity house.

The filings follow testimony describing deals that allegedly grew from roughly 100 grams to kilogram-sized quantities. Defense attorneys have emphasized that the cases remain allegations and that the legal process will determine what evidence can be used at trial.

Defendants signal not-guilty pleas

Agostino Abbatiello, Mohammed Huraibi, Robert Zanolla, Thomas Robinson and Paul Robinson are among 14 people charged in the alleged operation. Court documents indicate that all five plan to plead not guilty as their cases proceed in Centre County. The charges allege that cocaine was brought into the State College area and distributed to Penn State students through fraternity connections.

The defendants waived formal arraignments that had been scheduled at the Centre County Courthouse. Their next listed proceeding is a pretrial conference on Nov. 16. A judge previously determined that sufficient evidence existed for charges against the five defendants to move forward, but that ruling does not establish guilt.

Jury trial requests and upcoming court date

Agostino Abbatiello, Robert Zanolla and Thomas Robinson requested jury trials on their waiver forms. Mohammed Huraibi and Paul Robinson indicated that they intend to plead not guilty but did not choose between a jury and non-jury trial.

Robert Zanolla has entered a formal not-guilty plea and requested a jury trial, according to his attorney, Korey Leslie. The defense has requested the evidence prosecutors intend to use and is reviewing it ahead of possible pretrial litigation. The November conference is expected to address procedural issues as the cases develop.

Testimony describes alleged fraternity packaging

Testimony from Thomas Robinson described an alleged distribution process that began in 2023. He said he and Mohammed Huraibi initially purchased about 100 grams of cocaine from Agostino Abbatiello for approximately $4,000. According to the testimony, the cocaine was kept in a fraternity room, divided into half-gram bags and sold for about $80 each.

Thomas Robinson testified that the quantities later increased to kilogram-sized purchases and that he arranged some transactions with Agostino Abbatiello through Snapchat messages that disappeared after 24 hours. Mohammed Huraibi also testified that he and Thomas Robinson bought cocaine in bulk for resale, first packaging it themselves before fraternity pledges allegedly became involved.

Lawyers challenge assumptions and evidence

Charging documents portray Agostino Abbatiello as a high-level supplier who allegedly used fraternity relationships to distribute cocaine near Penn State. Robert Zanolla is accused of helping travel from New York City to obtain cocaine and transport it to State College.

Korey Leslie said the defense would examine the evidence before making further arguments. He declined to comment on the substance of the case, saying:

“Pre-judging the evidence would be foolish.”

Attorney Michael DeRiso, who represents Paul Robinson, described the waiver of formal arraignment as primarily procedural. He said the step begins the timetable for pretrial motions, permits discovery requests and provides the formal charging document.

“It is basically a paper date … nothing exciting,”

Michael DeRiso said.

Separate allegations involving a hidden safe

Paul Robinson faces separate allegations involving a safe that was allegedly hidden in a wooded area after the arrest of his son, Thomas Robinson. Witness Ryan Matson testified that Paul Robinson helped him retrieve the safe and knew where it had been placed.

Ryan Matson said Thomas Robinson wanted to keep drugs and money from being found during a possible search. He also testified that Paul Robinson later urged him not to disclose the safe’s location. Under questioning, Ryan Matson acknowledged that he never opened the safe and initially withheld information from investigators because he wanted to protect Thomas Robinson. The defense has challenged whether Paul Robinson knew what the safe contained.

Summary

The five defendants remain subject to allegations that they participated in a cocaine distribution network tied to Penn State and State College. The November conference and any later hearings will determine how the cases proceed, while the defendants remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
