Retired Police Chief Helps Restrain Unruly Passenger on United Flight

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 6, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Brian O’Hara, the retired Minneapolis police chief, helped restrain an allegedly unruly passenger during a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. O’Hara said flight attendants spent about 45 minutes trying to calm the passenger after refusing to serve him more alcohol. The situation became physical when the man allegedly lunged toward the crew, prompting O’Hara and two off-duty sheriff’s deputies to intervene. The aircraft landed safely, and local law enforcement met the flight in Fort Lauderdale.

United Airlines said the crew and passengers assisted with the incident, while authorities had not publicly identified the passenger or announced criminal charges as of Thursday afternoon.

Passenger allegedly escalates after alcohol cutoff

O’Hara said the passenger repeatedly berated flight attendants, tried to leave his seat and behaved erratically during the flight. The crew reportedly spent nearly 45 minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and keep the cabin calm.

O’Hara said he later learned from the Broward Sheriff’s Office that the dispute began after the passenger was refused additional alcohol. He said the man continued shouting profanity and making threatening remarks before allegedly moving toward the flight attendants.

“About like for the last 45 minutes of the flight … all the flight attendants came over, and they were incredible,” O’Hara said. “Incredibly professional, just trying to talk to this guy to de-escalate things.”

Retired chief and deputies intervene

When the passenger allegedly lunged toward the crew, two passengers seated near the rear of the Boeing 737-900 grabbed him from behind. O’Hara then moved forward from his seat to assist.

The three men worked together to restrain the passenger with plastic flex cuffs and secure him in his seat. O’Hara later learned that the other two passengers were off-duty Bergen County Sheriff’s deputies from New Jersey. Their intervention allowed the flight attendants to return to their seats while the aircraft continued to its destination.

“No one should take the kind of verbal abuse that they did,” O’Hara said. “They were absolute professionals trying to keep everybody safe.”

United confirms flight and response details

The incident occurred aboard United Flight 1364, traveling from Newark to Fort Lauderdale. United said local law enforcement met the aircraft after it arrived in Florida to address the unruly passenger.

The airline said the flight was operated by a Boeing 737-900 carrying 174 passengers and six crew members, including two pilots and four flight attendants. United thanked the crew and customers who assisted with the situation and helped protect those aboard.

Incident highlights risks in confined aircraft

O’Hara, who spent 25 years in law enforcement and previously led public safety operations in Newark before serving as Minneapolis police chief, said the confrontation demonstrated how quickly an aggressive outburst can become dangerous in an aircraft cabin.

His wife, a lieutenant with the Newark Police Department, was seated nearby during the incident. O’Hara said he was aware that the confined space and uncertainty about the passenger’s motives could make a prolonged physical confrontation particularly hazardous.

“It’s dangerous. We’re in such a confined space like that, and someone’s going to act out like that because you don’t know potentially what the motivation might be,” O’Hara said.

He said airlines should ensure restraints are available and that at least some personnel receive training in how to use them safely when a passenger becomes violent.

Authorities had not announced charges

As of Thursday afternoon, authorities had not publicly identified the passenger or announced criminal charges. Local law enforcement met the plane after landing, but the available account did not specify what action was taken afterward.

O’Hara said he hoped people who are able to help would act when a situation threatens innocent bystanders. He described the episode as a reminder that passengers and crew may face serious safety challenges when disruptive behavior escalates during flight.
