Virginia Prison Drone Incursion Uncovers $324,000 Contraband Haul

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 25, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Virginia prison officials intercepted a package believed to have been delivered during an attempted drone incursion at Sussex I State Prison. The package contained an estimated $324,000 worth of contraband, including suspected methamphetamine, cellphones and tobacco products. Corrections staff found the package at about 1:30 a.m. Monday and referred the case for investigation. Authorities said the seizure illustrates the increasingly sophisticated methods used to move illegal items into correctional facilities.

The Virginia Department of Corrections said the items were discovered by staff at the state prison in Sussex County. The Office of Law Enforcement Services is investigating, and officials urged anyone with information about attempted smuggling at a department facility to contact investigators.

Package discovered after suspected drone delivery

Corrections staff at Sussex I State Prison discovered the suspicious package at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday. Officials described the incident as an attempted drone incursion, indicating that the package was believed to be associated with an effort to deliver contraband into the facility. The prison is operated by the Virginia Department of Corrections, which said staff members intercepted the shipment before it could enter circulation among incarcerated people.

The discovery took place at the prison rather than at an outside location, allowing officials to secure the items and begin documenting their contents. Authorities have not publicly identified who organized the attempted delivery or whether anyone was arrested.

Drugs and communication devices seized

The package included a one-pound bag of suspected methamphetamine, according to the department. Because the substance was described as suspected methamphetamine, the available information does not establish a final laboratory determination.

Investigators also found 17 cellphones, charging cables, three USB Wi-Fi adapters and two SIM cards. Such communication equipment is prohibited contraband in a prison setting, and its presence formed a significant part of the estimated prison value of the seizure.

Wide range of additional contraband found

Officials reported finding 20 sheets of paper that appeared to be saturated with an unknown liquid, along with multiple hex wrenches. The package also contained 30 disposable lighters, two cartons of cigarettes, one pound of loose-leaf tobacco and three packs of cigars.

Other items included two bottles of professional-grade tattoo ink, two bottles of perfume and two bottles of glue. The Virginia Department of Corrections estimated the combined prison value of all seized material at approximately $324,000.

Officials emphasize security risks

VADOC Director Joseph Walters said the seizure demonstrated how sophisticated attempts to smuggle drugs and other dangerous items into correctional facilities can be. He credited staff at Sussex I State Prison and law-enforcement personnel with remaining alert to possible deliveries.

“This investigation is an important reminder that some people will use sophisticated methods in an attempt to smuggle drugs and other dangerous contraband into Virginia Department of Corrections facilities,” Walters said.

Walters said the agency’s enforcement personnel would continue working to protect corrections employees, incarcerated people, probationers and communities across Virginia. The department has not disclosed additional security measures connected to the incident.

Investigation remains active

The Virginia Department of Corrections’ Office of Law Enforcement Services is leading the investigation. Officials have not released information about the suspected drone, its operator, the intended recipient or the precise location where the package was recovered.

Anyone with information about attempted smuggling into a VADOC facility is asked to contact the Office of Law Enforcement Services at 540-830-9280. The request for information suggests investigators are seeking evidence that could identify those involved and determine how the attempted delivery was organized.
