A six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed, while additional victims, including children, were injured. Dispatch audio records the emergency response

A roughly 30-minute dispatch log describes how emergency personnel responded after the pickup entered an area where children and spectators were gathered. Dispatchers designated the incident as a Level 3 mass-casualty incident involving numerous pedestrians.

Responders initially reported at least 11 patients, including two in serious medical emergencies. Another transmission referenced nine patients, two classified as code black and two as code blue, while others were assessed. The changing counts reflected the continuing triage process rather than a final injury total.

The recording also referred to a five-year-old victim with multisystem trauma who had a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15, indicating full responsiveness. More than 30 minutes into the recording, a responder reported finding another victim in the middle of the field.

Two victims died after the vehicle entered the field

The crash occurred Saturday afternoon at Stryker Sports Complex during a youth soccer event. Police identified those killed as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35. Both victims were from McPherson.

Authorities said 10 additional people, including five children, were injured. Other reporting described 11 people as hospitalized, while dispatch communications gave varying patient counts as responders continued triage. Officials have not announced a final account of how the pickup reached the field or what caused the collision.

Driver released as investigators examine the crash

The driver was initially taken into custody and later released without criminal charges. Police said the release was pending toxicology results and an examination of her Chevrolet pickup. They have not said whether charges will be filed.

Two of the driver’s children were inside the pickup, and another child was playing soccer on a different field. Investigators interviewed the driver and more than 30 witnesses, including the two children in the vehicle. Police also consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before releasing her.

Police have not publicly indicated whether the driver was impaired or whether another factor contributed to the crash. Toxicology testing and the vehicle examination remain pending.

Wichita plans temporary safety measures

On Monday, the City of Wichita said its public works division would install temporary barriers at key locations around Stryker Sports Complex. The measures are intended to provide added protection while officials work toward more permanent solutions.

The city also said it would assess security around the facility. Police were expected at the complex the following weekend, and local mental health professionals were to assist families affected by the crash.

Community officials respond as families seek support

The victims’ connection to McPherson prompted a response from Mayor Jim Loving, who said the community was grieving with the families of those killed and supporting those recovering from injuries. He also thanked bystanders who helped before the first ambulance arrived and recognized first responders in Wichita and McPherson.

The investigation remains open. Authorities have not provided a timetable for completing the toxicology analysis, vehicle examination or charging review.
