15 Arrested, 7 Vehicles Impounded in Long Island Street Takeover

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 16, 2026 U.S. News 4 Mins Read

Police arrested 15 people and impounded seven vehicles after an alleged street takeover disrupted traffic in Medford, New York, early Saturday. Authorities said drivers performed donuts, burnouts and other reckless stunts while vehicles blocked Sawgrass Drive. The Suffolk County Police Department said its Street Takeover Task Force tracked the group through several locations in Suffolk County before intervening.

The operation followed intelligence gathering and social media monitoring ahead of the planned gathering on Friday night, Aug. 14. Police said those arrested came from communities across Long Island and New York City, and multiple traffic tickets were issued.

Police track a planned gathering across Suffolk County

The Suffolk County Police Department said its Street Takeover Task Force learned of preparations for a gathering through intelligence work and monitoring of social media before Friday night. The suspected event was expected to take place somewhere in Suffolk County, which covers roughly 1,000 square miles across the eastern two-thirds of Long Island.

Investigators followed the group as it moved between locations during the night. Officers first disrupted attempted gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip, then responded to another reported gathering near Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue.

Roadway blocked during alleged Medford takeover

Police intercepted the group at about 12:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, near Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive in Medford. Authorities said numerous vehicles had effectively closed the roadway, creating conditions that prevented normal traffic from moving through the area.

According to the department, drivers engaged in reckless driving and performed stunts, donuts and burnouts in the street as spectators gathered. The activity prompted the task force response because the roadway was being used for an alleged unlawful speed contest rather than ordinary travel.

“Numerous vehicles effectively closed down the roadway on Sawgrass Drive by driving recklessly, performing stunts in the roadway, and doing donuts and burnouts,” police said.

Task force makes arrests and impounds vehicles

Members of the Street Takeover Task Force moved in at the Medford location and arrested 15 people, police said. Seven vehicles were impounded, and officers issued multiple traffic tickets as part of the enforcement action.

The department said the people arrested came from communities throughout Long Island and from New York City. The arrests followed the task force’s effort to locate the gathering as it shifted between different parts of Suffolk County.

Charges focus on unlawful speed contests

Fourteen of the 15 suspects were charged with participating in an unlawful speed contest and spectating an unlawful speed contest, according to police. The charges reflect the alleged roles of drivers and onlookers in an event centered on dangerous vehicle maneuvers and roadway obstruction.

The department did not provide additional details in the information released about the remaining arrest or the specific traffic violations issued. The reported operation targeted both the driving activity and the crowd that gathered to watch it.

Operation follows another Suffolk County crackdown

The Medford enforcement action came weeks after another large street takeover response in Suffolk County. Police said at least 200 all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes and motorcycles had entered roads in Hauppauge and Brentwood during the July Fourth weekend.

That earlier operation resulted in three arrests and the impounding of 10 vehicles, according to the department. Together, the incidents illustrate the continuing challenge authorities face when large groups move between locations and use public roads for stunts, racing-related activity and organized gatherings.
