Suspected Shark Strike Capsizes Kayak off California Coast

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 27, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A fisherman swam to shore after a suspected shark encounter damaged and partially sank his kayak off California’s Central Coast. The incident occurred about a mile offshore near Leffingwell Landing in Cambria on Monday morning. He was not injured, and firefighters later recovered the kayak, fishing equipment and personal belongings.

An expert who reviewed photographs said the damage was consistent with a shark encounter, but officials have not definitively confirmed that a shark was responsible. The incident adds to a history of reported shark encounters involving kayaks in the Cambria area.

Kayak is struck offshore

The fisherman was near Leffingwell Landing in Cambria at approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday when an unidentified object struck the underside of his kayak. The impact threw him into the water and capsized the vessel. He was fishing roughly one mile from the California coast when the incident occurred.

The force of the impact left punctures in the kayak’s hull. The fisherman climbed back aboard and attempted to paddle toward shore, but the vessel began taking on water and could not remain afloat.

Fisherman swims to safety

After the kayak became too damaged to use, the fisherman entered the water and swam the remaining distance to shore. He reached land without injuries, according to local fire officials. The circumstances required him to leave the kayak and its contents offshore while he made his way to safety.

Firefighters responded after he arrived on land. A rescue boat was launched to retrieve the damaged kayak, fishing gear and personal belongings. The response focused on recovering the equipment after the immediate safety threat had passed.

Expert assesses possible shark damage

Dr. Chris Lowe of California State University, Long Beach’s Shark Lab reviewed photographs of the damage at the request of officials. He determined that the condition of the kayak made it reasonable to suspect a shark was involved.

Officials have emphasized that the evidence does not definitively establish that a shark caused the damage. No species was confirmed, and the available information identifies the event as a suspected shark encounter rather than a verified attack.

Cambria has recorded similar encounters

The waters near Leffingwell Landing have been associated with comparable incidents. In May 2012, a shark struck a fishing kayak in the area, throwing fisherman Joey Nocchi into the water and damaging his vessel. He escaped without injuries, according to state wildlife records and contemporaneous reports.

In 2019, fisherman David Zamora reported that a roughly 10-foot great white shark bit his kayak about two miles offshore from Leffingwell Landing. Zamora was thrown into the water, climbed back aboard and was rescued by a nearby boater. He was not injured.

State wildlife officials say some white shark encounters may involve exploratory bites as the animals investigate unfamiliar objects in the water. Such behavior does not necessarily mean a shark was attempting to prey on a person.

Officials urge caution for ocean users

California has documented 233 shark incidents since 1950, including 36 involving kayaking or canoeing, according to Department of Fish and Wildlife figures updated in January 2026. The records include contact between sharks and kayaks, surfboards or other equipment, even when no person is injured.

Following Monday’s incident, the Cambria Fire Department advised people using the ocean to exercise additional caution, remain aware of their surroundings and avoid entering the water when sharks are visibly active. Officials also urged anyone facing an immediate threat or emergency to call 911.
