Marc Jacobs Says He Would Style Luigi Mangione for Trial

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 20, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Marc Jacobs said he would be open to styling Luigi Mangione if the defendant goes to trial, calling Mangione’s existing clothing choices fashionable. The comments came during a podcast interview conducted while Jacobs took a lie detector test. Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno criticized the idea, saying it could appear to support a defendant who has pleaded guilty to federal charges. Mangione’s possible state trial remains uncertain because his defense team has raised double jeopardy concerns.

Mangione is accused in the December 2024 shooting death of Brian Thompson, the former UnitedHealthcare chief executive. His courtroom clothing has attracted public attention, including a red sweater that reportedly sold out at Nordstrom stores and footwear choices photographed during earlier hearings. The case has made courtroom presentation part of a broader public discussion about celebrity, fashion and criminal proceedings.

Jacobs responds to a trial styling question

During the podcast interview, the host showed Marc Jacobs a photograph of Luigi Mangione and asked whether the designer would be willing to style him for a trial. Jacobs laughed before answering yes. He also said Mangione already looked good in the way he dressed, indicating that the defendant had developed a recognizable public image without professional assistance.

The exchange occurred while Jacobs was connected to a lie detector test. The interviewer also pointed to earlier court appearances by celebrities who had worn Jacobs designs, placing Mangione’s potential trial wardrobe within the larger history of high-profile courtroom fashion.

“I think he looks pretty good the way he dresses, actually,” Jacobs said.

Mangione’s courtroom clothing draws attention

Luigi Mangione has received sustained attention for his appearance since his arrest in Pennsylvania in December 2024. Investigators have linked him to the killing of Brian Thompson, who was shot in New York City on Dec. 4, 2024. Prosecutors have said Mangione stalked Thompson before the shooting.

His clothing became part of the public narrative after he appeared in court wearing Rockport loafers without socks. Photographs showed shackles around his bare ankles. In another hearing, heart-shaped notes were reportedly concealed inside socks sent with civilian clothing. A court officer seized the notes but permitted Mangione to wear the socks, which prosecutors later said he removed because he believed they did not look good.

Rotunno questions the message of designer support

Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein, said courtroom fashion can influence how defendants are perceived. She recalled how media treatment of prosecutor Marcia Clark during O.J. Simpson‘s 1990s murder trial affected Rotunno’s own decisions about courtroom clothing.

Rotunno nevertheless said she found it troubling that a designer would express interest in dressing Mangione. She described Mangione as having become a character and cult hero to some members of the public, and warned that overly polished clothing could also affect a jury’s response.

“I find it sad that a designer would in any way, shape or form want to support that,” Rotunno said.

Federal case could affect the state prosecution

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges last week, according to the report, creating uncertainty over the separate state case in New York. His defense team has argued that double jeopardy principles could prevent the state prosecution from proceeding after the federal matter.

If the federal case controls his future, Mangione could face a life sentence at a sentencing hearing scheduled for Dec. 18. Federal sentencing guidelines reportedly recommend a term of about 25 to 30 years, but Judge Margaret Garnett is not required to follow those recommendations. The legal outcome will determine whether Mangione appears at a state trial in civilian clothing or remains in custody without that proceeding.

Courtroom fashion remains a strategic consideration

Courtroom attire has drawn attention in other major criminal and civil cases, but clothing cannot substitute for legal arguments or evidence. Rotunno said defense teams must balance a defendant’s presentation against the risk of appearing overly calculated before jurors.

Jacobs also agreed during the interview that Mangione could be viewed as a trendsetter after a red sweater worn in court reportedly sold out at Nordstrom stores. He said he was not offended that Gwyneth Paltrow did not wear one of his designs during her 2023 ski-crash trial. A representative for Jacobs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

3 Donna Rotunno criticized the appearance of support for Mangione.
4 A double jeopardy claim could affect the New York state case.

Summary

The remarks highlight how fashion can become part of the public conversation surrounding a high-profile defendant. However, Mangione’s federal plea, the potential sentencing outcome and the unresolved double jeopardy issue remain more consequential than his courtroom wardrobe.
