Traffic stop escalates near a school zone

The incident began at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday during school-zone traffic enforcement near The Villages Intermediate Center in Sumter County. A deputy reportedly saw Qahiem Williams traveling 17 mph above the posted speed limit on County Road 466 near Tatonka Terrace.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy made a U-turn and activated emergency lights to stop Williams. Authorities allege that Williams accelerated instead of pulling over, then sideswiped two vehicles at a traffic light as he continued driving.

Head-on collision with the school bus

Investigators said the earlier collisions damaged the axle of Williams’ vehicle. The disabled vehicle then struck a Sumter County school bus head-on on County Road 103. The bus was carrying 19 children at the time of the crash.

Video recorded inside the bus captured the impact. Authorities said footage appeared to show the driver’s-side door of Williams’ vehicle opening shortly before the collision. Despite the force of the crash, the sheriff’s office reported that every child aboard the bus was safe and uninjured.

Foot pursuit leads to an arrest

After the collision, Williams allegedly exited his damaged vehicle and fled on foot. Police body-camera footage showed a deputy pursuing him away from the crash site.

The deputy eventually apprehended Williams near a Walmart in Sumter County. Authorities said Williams was medically cleared before being transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. The arrest followed a coordinated response to the collision and the alleged flight from officers.

Charges and outstanding warrants

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Williams faces multiple charges, including fleeing or eluding, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run and a moving traffic violation.

Authorities also said Williams had two outstanding Sumter County warrants. Those warrants involved allegations of fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license. The detention center record listed him as being held without bond. The allegations remain subject to the legal process.

Sheriff condemns alleged conduct

Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden criticized the alleged actions, emphasizing the danger created when a driver flees in an area used by schoolchildren. He said authorities believed Williams had a history of similar behavior.

“I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Breeden said. “This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets.”

The case centers on the alleged decision to flee a traffic stop, the chain of crashes that followed and the subsequent foot pursuit. No injuries were reported among the 19 children on the bus.
