Emergency response on Quandary Peak

Summit County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at about 6:45 a.m. Friday after receiving a report of a hiker who had passed out and was not breathing. The incident occurred on the lower slopes of Quandary Peak, a 14,271-foot mountain in the Rocky Mountains and the highest summit in Colorado’s Tenmile Range.

Other hikers began lifesaving efforts before authorities reached Anderson. They performed CPR and continued trying to revive him until first responders arrived and took over the emergency response, according to Sgt. Mike Schilling. Authorities had not announced an official cause of death.

A sudden death during a morning hike

Anderson, 45, was hiking Quandary Peak when he collapsed Friday morning. The available details indicate that fellow hikers immediately sought help and provided emergency care at the scene. The circumstances that led to his collapse were not disclosed.

The mountain is a popular high-altitude hiking destination, but officials did not identify a specific environmental or medical factor in Anderson’s death. The investigation and any further determination about the cause remained pending at the time of the announcement.

Anderson’s public service in Englewood

Joe Anderson was elected to represent District 3 on the Englewood City Council in 2019 and won a second four-year term in 2023. His fellow council members elected him mayor pro tem in December of that year.

Before entering elected office, Anderson held pastoral roles at local churches and helped establish Change the Trend, a coalition focused on homelessness. He also spent years coordinating a community service effort that helped seniors and people with disabilities complete home repairs.

Policy priorities and community work

As a council member, Anderson worked on homelessness, affordable housing, infrastructure, economic development, and pedestrian and bicycle safety. His work included efforts to repair and expand Englewood’s aging stormwater system after deadly flooding in 2018.

Anderson also advocated balancing the cost of stormwater improvements with what residents and businesses could afford. He supported changes to development rules intended to reduce housing costs and homelessness, including streamlined regulations and smaller housing units. His approach combined policy changes with direct community service.

Tributes from city officials

Englewood Mayor Othoniel Sierra said the city was shocked and saddened by Anderson’s sudden death. Sierra described Anderson as someone who consistently helped others in his roles as a friend, neighbor, pastor and council member.

“This is a tremendous loss for our city and our heart goes out to his family and friends during this time of loss,” Sierra said.

Outgoing City Manager Shawn Lewis remembered Anderson as both an encourager and a demanding advocate for better work. Lewis said Anderson supported city employees personally while challenging them to think more ambitiously. He also recalled Anderson offering to pray for him when Lewis’s parents were hospitalized during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He cared for me and other staff members as people,” Lewis said, adding that he would remember Anderson’s kindness and care throughout his time on the council.
