Former NYPD Detective Accused in Fatal George Washington Bridge Shooting

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 23, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Former NYPD detective Victor Romero, 62, is accused of fatally shooting Con Edison worker Koran Irvine, 46, during a road-rage encounter on the George Washington Bridge. Prosecutors say Romero fired one shot from an employer-owned Range Rover before fleeing toward Rockland County. He faces a first-degree manslaughter charge and was ordered held on $1 million bail. Romero is scheduled to return to court on October 27.

The shooting occurred Tuesday evening as both men approached the bridge. Investigators say surveillance footage and vehicle records place Romero’s SUV behind Irvine’s vehicle and show the SUV moving alongside it before the shot was fired.

Irvine was struck in the right shoulder after the bullet passed through the rear passenger window of his car. Prosecutors say he later died, while Romero did not call 911 or surrender before detectives found him and the vehicle at his Manhattan workplace the next day.

The alleged bridge shooting and victim

The incident began Tuesday evening on the George Washington Bridge in New York as Romero and Irvine were traveling toward the span. Assistant District Attorney Matthew Sears told the court that the two vehicles nearly collided before the encounter escalated. Irvine, who worked for Con Edison, was driving when he was shot.

According to prosecutors, the bullet entered through the rear passenger window of Irvine’s vehicle and struck him in the right shoulder. His vehicle then moved abruptly into the far-right lane and stopped in active traffic. Irvine was 46 years old. Family members appeared outside court and remembered him as a husband and father.

Surveillance evidence and the alleged gunfire

Prosecutors say surveillance video captured Romero closely following Irvine’s car as both vehicles crossed the bridge. The video allegedly shows Romero moving to the right side of Irvine’s vehicle and firing a single shot from the driver’s seat.

Investigators are relying on the video, vehicle-position evidence and registration records to establish what happened. Sears alleged in court that Romero’s SUV was the only vehicle in a position to fire the fatal shot. The evidence remains part of the prosecution’s case, and Romero has not been convicted.

The employer-owned SUV and alleged flight

Romero previously worked as an NYPD detective and was employed at the time as a driver and private security guard for QVT Financial, a biotech and energy investment firm. The company vehicle was a Range Rover assigned directly to him, according to vehicle records and video evidence presented by prosecutors.

After the shooting, Romero allegedly passed Irvine’s stopped vehicle, crossed the bridge and continued north on the Palisades Interstate Parkway toward his home in Rockland County. Authorities say he did not contact emergency services or surrender to police. Detectives located him and the employer-issued SUV at his Manhattan workplace the following day.

“We are aware of the press reports concerning Victor Romero and are cooperating with the authorities in this matter,” QVT Financial said in a statement.

Weapons recovered during the investigation

Authorities recovered a revolver from Romero, prosecutors said. Romero allegedly acknowledged that he carried the weapon daily. Investigators later searched his residence and found two additional handguns.

All three firearms were undergoing forensic processing, according to prosecutors. The testing is expected to help investigators determine whether any of the weapons was connected to the shooting. No forensic result was identified in the available account.

Charges, bail and the next court date

Romero appeared in court Thursday, where a judge granted the district attorney’s request for $1 million bail. He is charged with first-degree manslaughter in connection with Irvine’s death. Prosecutors cited the video evidence, the potential prison sentence and Romero’s alleged flight from the scene when seeking the high bail amount.

Romero is scheduled to return to court on October 27. His attorney, Alan Abramson, was contacted for comment. The case remains pending, and the allegations will be tested through court proceedings.
