News EditorBy News EditorOctober 21, 2026 U.S. News 4 Mins Read

A Connecticut man with a prior felony murder conviction has been charged in the fatal shooting of a Bridgeport grandfather during an alleged road rage confrontation. Police arrested Jorge Ortiz, 57, after a week-long manhunt that ended with a brief foot chase. The victim, Nelson Batista, 48, had buried his 25-year-old Air Force son days before the shooting.

Ortiz faces charges of murder, criminal possession of a pistol and carrying a pistol without a permit. Investigators said the two men were strangers and described the incident as a random act.

Arrest follows week-long manhunt

Jorge Ortiz was arrested on a Monday in Bridgeport, Connecticut, following a brief foot chase, according to city police. The arrest ended a week-long search connected to the Oct. 12 shooting of Nelson Batista.

Police charged Ortiz with murder, criminal possession of a pistol and carrying a pistol without a permit. The charges relate to a confrontation that occurred at about 9 a.m. on Park Avenue and a nearby side street. Ortiz is accused of shooting Batista, who died at a hospital after being struck in the chest.

What investigators say happened

A police affidavit says surveillance footage showed a man identified as Ortiz following a woman as she drove along Park Avenue. When the driver turned onto a side street, the man allegedly slapped the side of the vehicle, prompting the driver to stop and exit.

Investigators allege that Ortiz punched Batista first. The two men then fell to the ground and struggled for control of a handgun. Video recorded from inside a vehicle allegedly shows the attacker rising, striking Batista in the head with the butt of a pistol and leaving while Batista lay motionless in the street.

The city’s ShotSpotter system recorded at least two gunshots. The medical examiner determined that one bullet struck Batista in the chest. Police Chief Roderick Porter said the men were strangers and characterized the shooting as random.

“This was a random act,” Roderick Porter told reporters at a briefing announcing the arrest.

Community evidence aided identification

Police said information from the public played a significant role in locating Ortiz. A woman recorded part of the incident on a cellphone, while other witnesses helped investigators identify the suspect shown in photographs and video.

A man also contacted police and said he could identify Ortiz as the person in an image. In addition, a detective recognized Ortiz from previous encounters, including an interaction in March, according to the affidavit. These leads helped investigators build the case and locate Ortiz after the shooting.

Ortiz’s prior murder conviction

Court records show that Ortiz received a 30-year sentence in 1992 for a felony murder conviction. Police said he was no longer on parole when Batista was killed.

The records also indicate that Ortiz had been arrested on misdemeanor drug charges in a case that remained pending at the time of the shooting. That arrest followed an earlier encounter in March, according to the police affidavit. The current allegations are separate from the prior conviction and have resulted in new criminal charges.

Batista’s family and recent loss

Nelson Batista was a father of six and grandfather of three. His son, Pierce Batista, a 25-year-old Air Force senior airman, had been buried in Louisiana on Oct. 3, according to an online obituary. Batista was killed only days later in Bridgeport.

Batista’s obituary described him as a devoted fan of Major League Baseball and the NFL, with a particular fondness for the New York Yankees. His funeral was scheduled as police announced Ortiz’s arrest, adding to the family’s loss as investigators detailed the circumstances of the shooting.
