Four Culpeper, Virginia, police officers entered a smoke-filled home on October 3 to rescue a man who had not escaped with other residents. Officers found him unconscious in a second-floor bedroom and dragged him into the hallway before firefighters carried him outside. The rescued man was taken to a hospital and later transferred to a regional burn center, while three officers received treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

The rescue unfolded as heavy smoke poured from the windows of the wooden house and residents from separate apartments waited outside. The fire’s cause and the man’s identity remain undisclosed because the investigation is active.

Officers respond to a smoke-filled home

Police officers from the Culpeper Police Department responded to the wooden house in Culpeper on the evening of October 3, 2026. Heavy smoke was coming from the windows when they arrived, and residents living in separate apartments had already made it outside. The residents told officers that one man might still be inside, creating an immediate need to search the building before the fire spread further.

Officer Ashley Sain entered first without protective gear and began checking doors. Officer Neal Coffey soon joined her. Their initial search was carried out while smoke alarms sounded and conditions inside the home deteriorated.

Search reaches a locked second-floor room

Body-worn camera footage showed an officer running up the stairs and passing red “No Smoking” signs on the walls. On the second floor, Sain and Coffey found a door locked from the inside, with smoke coming through gaps above and below it.

Sain called out, “Police department, if you’re in here!” over the sound of the alarms. Coffey used a small pocket tool to open the lock, then announced the officers’ presence again. No one answered, but thick black smoke and visible flames were coming from the bedroom, prompting the officers to continue the search.

Officers locate and remove the trapped man

Sergeant David Cole and Officer Michael Beel reached the second floor as the search continued. Coffey crawled into the bedroom on his hands and knees, then moved flat along the wooden floor while using a flashlight. Visibility was severely limited by the smoke.

After moving farther into the room, Coffey found a man lying unresponsive on a bed. He pulled the man toward the floor and called for assistance, saying, “We’ve got to get him out! I have him! He’s breathing!” Beel crawled into the room to help, and the four officers dragged the unconscious man into the hallway.

Firefighters complete the rescue and extinguish the blaze

A firefighter wearing protective equipment then emerged through the smoke. Firefighters took control of the removal operation and carried the man out of the burning building. They also extinguished the fire after the officers had brought the resident into the hallway.

The rescued resident was transported to a hospital and later transferred to a regional burn center. Officials did not release his name or identify the cause of the fire, citing the ongoing investigation. The available account does not provide further details about his condition.

Injuries, investigation and departmental recognition

Three of the four police officers were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries. All three were released that evening. The incident highlighted the risks officers faced while entering a burning building without the specialized protective equipment normally used by firefighters.

The four officers received valor awards from the Culpeper Police Department on October 14. Captain Kevin Tooley, who supervised the scene, said the officers had gone beyond the normal duties of a police department.

“We normally don’t go into burning buildings. I mean, that’s not our job. That’s typically the fire department’s job. But we don’t know how to say no, especially when there’s a life that we know we have to save.”
