Ex-Los Angeles Detective Charged Again After Cold Case Review

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 15, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A former Los Angeles vice detective who was sentenced to 102 years in prison for multiple rapes and armed robberies has been arrested on new charges in Ventura County. Michael Douglas Brambles, 77, was released on parole in 2020 under a California law allowing some elderly inmates to seek release. Investigators discovered his parole status while reviewing a decades-old case through a federal sexual assault investigation initiative. He is now accused of kidnapping to commit robbery while personally using a firearm.

New charges follow a cold case review

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said Brambles was arrested Wednesday and is being held in Ventura County on $2 million bail. The charges stem from an alleged robbery and sexual assault at Arabella’s Boutique in Thousand Oaks, California, approximately 32 years ago. The case was revisited as investigators examined unresolved sexual assault evidence through the federal Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. During that review, investigators learned that Brambles, who had previously been identified as a suspect, was no longer incarcerated.

Brambles is charged with kidnapping to commit robbery while personally using a firearm. Prosecutors also allege aggravating circumstances, including great violence, a particularly vulnerable victim, planning or sophistication, and violent conduct suggesting a serious danger to society. The charges are allegations, and Brambles has not been convicted in this case.

Details of the alleged Thousand Oaks attack

According to prosecutors, Brambles entered the boutique while a woman identified as SW was closing the Thousand Oaks business. He allegedly pointed a handgun at her and forced her into a back room. Investigators say he tied her hands behind her back, sexually assaulted her and stole property from the business before leaving.

The alleged sexual assault itself cannot be charged because the applicable statute of limitations has expired. Prosecutors are instead pursuing the kidnapping and robbery-related allegations that remain legally chargeable. The investigation linked the older incident to a suspect who was already facing prosecution in Los Angeles County at the time.

Earlier convictions and parole release

Brambles was previously convicted on 26 counts, including 18 armed robberies and multiple sexual assaults. He received a 102-year prison sentence about three decades ago. The Ventura County case was dismissed after SW agreed to that outcome because she believed the sentence meant Brambles would remain imprisoned for the rest of his life.

California law later allowed some elderly incarcerated people to apply for parole. Brambles was released in 2020 after obtaining parole, meaning he had served only part of the sentence imposed for his earlier convictions. At his parole hearing, he denied sexually assaulting women beyond the cases for which he had already been convicted in Los Angeles County.

Victim and prosecutors seek accountability

SW said investigators contacted her several months ago and told her that Brambles had been released. She described the news as shocking and said she believed justice had been denied when he served only a fraction of the sentence. She now says she is prepared to pursue accountability for herself and other victims.

“I am thankful to have this opportunity now to seek justice for myself and for his other victims.”

District Attorney Erik Nasarenko credited SW’s willingness to face the alleged attacker again. He said the case would not have returned to court without her courage and resolve, and that prosecutors would continue working to hold Brambles responsible for the accusations from 32 years ago.

“Despite the passage of time and the long road ahead, SW is committed to seeing Michael Brambles held responsible for these violent accusations from 32 years ago, and so are we.”

Case status and potential sentence

Brambles remains in custody in Ventura County while the new case proceeds. The current charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 12 years to life if he is convicted. The final outcome will depend on court proceedings, evidence and any decisions made by prosecutors and the court.

The case illustrates how cold case reviews can identify developments that were not available when an investigation was initially closed. Here, the review brought investigators back to a suspect whose later parole had changed the circumstances surrounding the unresolved allegations.
