Crash sends vehicle down steep Grand Junction hillside

The victims were five teenage boys from the Grand Junction community. Authorities said they were traveling along Lookout Lane late Saturday when their vehicle veered off the roadway and descended a steep slope overlooking the area near railroad tracks and the Gunnison River.

Grand Junction police and fire crews responded after 911 dispatchers received a report at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday that a vehicle may have gone over the edge of a cliff. Responders located the wrecked vehicle on the hillside. All five teenagers died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Seat belt and ejection details emerge

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said three of the teenagers, including the driver and the front-seat passenger, were wearing seat belts. The other two boys were not buckled in and were ejected during the vehicle’s rollover.

Authorities have not publicly identified the driver or determined what caused the vehicle to leave the road. Police said speed is being investigated as a possible factor. The coroner’s office has not released the victims’ names because of its policy against publicly identifying minors.

Families identify victims and seek support

Families and loved ones identified the teenagers as Braden Taylor, Tristan Tucker, Titus Gould, William Simms and Tyler Martinez. Taylor’s grandfather, Calvin Wilken, said in a social media post that his grandson was a passenger in the vehicle and that the crash happened near the family’s former home.

“Very sad news our youngest grandson Braden 17 died in a car rollover down 5 ledges of a very steep drop off over looking the railroad tracks and the Gunnison River,” Wilken wrote.

Fundraisers and meal-support efforts were established for the families. A fundraiser for Taylor’s parents described him as their youngest son and said they were facing unexpected funeral expenses while grieving. Tucker was remembered by supporters as a teenager preparing for his senior year, driver’s license and other milestones associated with turning 17.

Grand Junction community responds to tragedy

The deaths have affected families, friends, schools and businesses across Grand Junction. A local business shared verified donation links for all five families and said the loss was especially painful as students returned to school and the new academic year began.

“Our hearts are broken for the five young lives tragically lost over the weekend and for their family and friends who are left with this unimaginable loss,” the business said.

Loved ones also publicly mourned the teenagers and asked the community to keep all five families in their thoughts and prayers. Debbie Gallegos Martinez, Martinez’s grandmother, wrote that her grandson was among those killed. A support effort was also created for Gould’s family after his death.

Investigation continues as school year starts

Grand Junction police and other authorities continue to examine the circumstances of the crash, including the vehicle’s movement off Lookout Lane and whether speed played a role. Officials have not announced a final cause or provided details about any additional contributing factors.

The police department said the victims were neighbors, friends and family to the community. As investigators work to establish what happened, residents are supporting the bereaved families and one another during the start of the school year.
