A Florida father was fatally shot after intervening in a roadside fight near his daughter’s elementary school in Apopka. Daryl Alexander Hill, 56, had just dropped off his 10-year-old daughter for her first day of school when he encountered the altercation on Tuesday morning, Aug. 11, 2026. Authorities allege that Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26, retrieved a shotgun from a pickup truck and fired at Hill as he ran away. Vazquez was arrested on a second-degree murder charge and is being held without bond.

Shooting followed a roadside vehicle crash

The confrontation occurred at the intersection of Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads in Apopka, near Wolf Lake Elementary School. Witnesses told investigators that a man and a woman were fighting inside a white Chevrolet Silverado when the truck crashed into a black Lexus. The dispute then moved onto the sidewalk, where the two continued arguing.

The man was identified as Vazquez and the woman as Kaidy Honaker. According to an arrest affidavit, Vazquez was shirtless and barefoot, appeared to be yelling at Honaker, and pointed at her during the confrontation. The affidavit was provided to authorities as part of the investigation into the fatal shooting.

Bystander intervened in the confrontation

Hill was riding a bicycle nearby when he saw the altercation, according to two witnesses cited in the affidavit. Authorities allege that he stepped in because someone appeared to be in distress. The intervention led to a physical struggle between Hill and Vazquez, with both men going into nearby bushes.

Honaker later told investigators that she joined the struggle to pull Hill off Vazquez. After the fight, Hill began running away with his hands raised and shouted for help, the affidavit states. He was then shot and later died at a hospital.

“Witnessing that altercation, a Good Samaritan attempted to intervene and was shot. That man, 56-year-old Daryl Alexander Hill, later died at the hospital.”

Investigators allege shotgun was used

The affidavit alleges that Vazquez returned to his pickup truck, retrieved a firearm later identified as a shotgun, and fired one round at Hill. The shot struck Hill as he moved away from the fight. Investigators said Vazquez gave several different accounts of the incident during questioning.

According to the affidavit, Vazquez told investigators that Hill had been fighting him and was gaining the advantage. The account will be considered as the criminal case proceeds, while the murder allegation remains a charge rather than a finding of guilt.

Suspect’s bond was revoked after arrest

Vazquez was arrested on a second-degree murder charge in connection with Hill’s death. At the time of the shooting, he was already out on bond in an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon case.

After the new arrest, a judge revoked that bond and ordered Vazquez held without bond in both the earlier case and the murder case. The legal proceedings will determine the evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Family remembers Hill as compassionate

Hill is survived by his wife, two adult children and his 10-year-old daughter. His family said he had dropped off his daughter for her first day of elementary school shortly before the shooting. They described him as someone who routinely helped people, including strangers.

“He’s got the biggest heart in the entire world. He loved everybody. He just loved his fellow person, and he was very non-judgmental,” his son, Damon Hill, said.

Suzanne Hill, Hill’s wife, said he cared for friends, family members and strangers and frequently stepped in to help. She said that willingness to assist others ultimately placed him in danger during the roadside confrontation.
