Florida Mom’s Ex-Fiancé Arrested in 2011 Disappearance and Presumed Murder

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 15, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Michelle Parker disappeared in Orlando, Florida, on Nov. 17, 2011, hours after a prerecorded courtroom television episode featuring her dispute with her former fiancé, Dale Smith Jr. Police arrested Smith, 55, on Wednesday and charged him with second-degree murder, although Parker’s body has not been found. Investigators said a renewed review of the case, including digital forensic work, led to the arrest. Authorities said the evidence points to Smith as the person responsible for Parker’s death.

Parker was last seen after dropping her twins off with Smith. Her vehicle was later found abandoned, and her phone was recovered from a lake, while investigators continued examining Smith’s statements and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The disappearance after a televised dispute

Michelle Parker vanished in Orlando on Nov. 17, 2011, after leaving her twins with Dale Smith Jr., her former fiancé. The disappearance occurred the same afternoon that a prerecorded courtroom television program aired a segment involving the pair’s dispute over a $5,000 engagement ring.

During the televised proceeding, Parker described Smith as malicious and vindictive and said he had demanded the ring back. Friends had previously characterized the relationship as turbulent. Parker was reported missing after she failed to appear at work, prompting concern among relatives and colleagues.

The evidence found during the early investigation

Family members became alarmed after Parker’s brother, Dustin, texted her and received a short reply reading “Waterford.” Relatives said the one-word response was unlike Parker’s usual messages. Investigators later found her Hummer abandoned several days after she disappeared near an apartment complex west of the Mall at Millenia.

The decal advertising Parker’s airbrush-tanning business had been removed from the vehicle. A dive team subsequently recovered her iPhone from a lake approximately four miles from her home. Parker’s body has never been located.

Why police focused on the former fiancé

Police identified Smith as a primary suspect for years because of his relationship with Parker, the timing of her disappearance and the circumstances surrounding the couple’s dispute. However, investigators did not initially believe they had enough evidence to make an arrest.

Detective Phil McMickin said Smith had been interviewed by police multiple times. Investigators also questioned him during depositions connected to the case. According to McMickin, Smith gave different answers when asked specific questions on separate occasions.

“The suspect was interviewed more than once, and since then has taken part in depositions related to this case, and very specific questions were asked of him numerous times over the years where he gave different answers to those same questions,” McMickin said.

The renewed investigation and arrest

Smith was arrested Wednesday in Orlando by local police and charged with second-degree murder in Parker’s death. The arrest followed years of investigative work and a focused effort during the previous year, when an expanded team reexamined evidence from the 2011 case.

Authorities said advances in digital forensics helped investigators reassess information that had not produced an arrest earlier. Police stated that “all evidence leads to Dale Smith Jr. as the person responsible for Michelle’s murder.” Smith’s defense attorney was contacted for comment.

The case remains a no-body homicide prosecution

The prosecution is proceeding even though Parker’s remains have not been found. The abandoned vehicle, the recovery of her phone from a nearby lake and the alleged inconsistencies in Smith’s answers form part of the investigative record described by police.

The arrest marks a major development nearly 15 years after Parker disappeared, but the charge remains an allegation unless proven in court. Further legal proceedings will determine how prosecutors present the evidence and how the defense responds.
