A Kansas man allegedly killed the mother of his children and their four young children inside a Winfield home before taking his own life, authorities said. Ronald H. Williams Sr., 53, reportedly told a 911 dispatcher that he had killed his family and was preparing to die. 911 call and discovery at the Winfield home

Authorities said Ronald H. Williams Sr. called 911 on Tuesday morning and claimed he had killed his four children and their mother. The victims were identified as Kelly L. George, 44; Carol A. Williams, 9; Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7; Sarah K. Williams, 5; and Kelly M. Magee-Williams, 3. Williams was also found dead inside the home.

The killings occurred in a residential neighborhood in Winfield, Kansas. Investigators said the victims and Williams died from gunshot wounds. Police believe the shot heard by the first responding officer was Williams taking his own life, though the investigation remains ongoing.

Police response and barricade procedure

Winfield officers were working a traffic crash approximately two blocks from the residence when the emergency call came in. They reached the home nearly immediately, according to Police Chief Robbie DeLong. As an officer approached, a single gunshot was heard from inside.

Because officers could not initially determine what had happened, they withdrew, established a perimeter and treated the residence as a barricaded situation. Nearly two hours later, officers entered through the front door and found the six bodies. The response included a subsequent effort to provide peer support and mental health assistance to personnel exposed to the scene.

Earlier contacts and criminal history

Chief DeLong said police had interacted with Williams during the preceding weeks over what he described as erratic behavior. Authorities had also received calls about aggressive conduct in public and reports of gunfire, although investigators were unable to determine the source of those reported shots.

Officials said those earlier encounters did not indicate that Williams was about to kill his family. Williams was listed on the Kansas sex offender registry under the name Freddie Lu’Carl’s Williams, with Ronald Williams among multiple aliases. Court records indicated that his criminal history extended nearly three decades and included felony cases involving drugs, battery, assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary, attempted rape and kidnapping, with cases dating from 1995 through 2024 across several Kansas counties.

Neighbors describe shock and unanswered questions

People living near the home said the deaths left the neighborhood struggling to understand how the violence occurred. Ann Stofferan, who lives a few houses away, said learning that children were among the victims was especially distressing.

“I just felt so sad and heartbroken for that family. Because I just can’t imagine what that man was thinking to do that. I just can’t.”

Another neighbor recalled hearing Williams make a threatening statement to his wife before the killings, but said she did not understand its meaning at the time. Tonya Asbury, who lives about a block away, questioned whether more could have been done to prevent the deaths.

“I hate to say it, but somebody failed. Somebody in this community failed that family. Failed him and that family.”

Investigation continues without a public motive

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department are continuing to examine the deaths, the 911 call, the shooting sequence and Williams’s previous contacts with authorities. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive or said whether additional people were involved.

Chief DeLong described the case as unprecedented in his more than two decades with the community. The investigation is expected to clarify the timeline and circumstances surrounding the deaths while officials provide support to responding officers and affected residents.
