News EditorBy News EditorOctober 18, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer field in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 others. Police released the 34-year-old driver without charges while awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the Chevrolet pickup. Five children were among those injured, and investigators have not determined whether the crash involved a medical emergency, impairment, a mechanical failure or another factor.

The crash occurred at about 3:25 p.m. at Stryker Sports Complex, where families had gathered for youth soccer and an adjacent girls flag football championship. Emergency crews transported 11 people to Wichita hospitals, including one woman who was treated for unrelated medical complications.

The crash and the victims

Police said the pickup moved from a parking space onto a soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita shortly after 3:25 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. The collision killed Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both of McPherson, Kansas. Authorities said the victims were not related.

Bystanders and emergency responders helped injured people at the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts, Adrian and Schafer died on the field. The incident also disrupted a girls flag football state championship being held on an adjacent field, prompting officials to suspend the event for the remainder of the weekend.

Driver released as evidence is examined

The 34-year-old driver was initially taken into custody but was released Sunday without charges. Police said the decision followed interviews with more than 30 witnesses, including the two children who were in the pickup, and consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology findings and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. Police have not said whether the crash was intentional or resulted from a medical emergency, impairment, a vehicle problem or another cause. Authorities said the driver had a valid license, no outstanding warrants and was cooperating with investigators.

Hospitalized children and adults

Ten people were transported to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center with injuries described by police as noncritical. The injured children included a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, two 8-year-old boys and a 9-year-old girl. Five injured adults ranged in age from 28 to 68.

An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries, bringing the total number of people transported from the scene to 11. Police have not reported additional changes in the conditions of those injured.

Community response and support

The tragedy deeply affected the soccer community, which includes families, players, coaches and spectators. Sporting Wichita Academy said the incident had shaken a community built around shared participation and support.

“Soccer is more than a game. It is a community. It is families in the stands, teammates standing beside one another, and people who come together through a shared love of the game.”

Meddys announced that it would donate 20% of revenue from its Wichita and Salina locations from Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 to families affected by the crash. The restaurant also offered free meals to the immediate families of injured people while their relatives remain hospitalized. Kingdom Athletics Mission will receive and distribute donations, including contributions raised through online fundraising efforts.

Investigation and next steps

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said police were expected to present an initial case review early this week. District Attorney Marc Bennett’s office said it would share information as appropriate after reviewing the case.

Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators know what happened but are working to establish why it happened. Capt. Aaron Moses said at an earlier briefing that the driver was cooperating. Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at 316-268-4407. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
