Lindsay Clancy Trial: Family Described Severe Mental Health Decline Before Children’s Deaths

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 18, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Lindsay Clancy’s relatives testified that they became deeply concerned about her mental health in the months before the deaths of her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Her mother-in-law said Clancy was struggling with insomnia, anxiety, sadness and loss of appetite, and was “begging for help.” The defense does not dispute that Clancy killed the children but argues that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible.

Testimony came during the defense portion of Clancy’s murder trial at Plymouth Superior Court. Prosecutors have charged her with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan, all under 6 years old.

Family members describe growing concern

Susan Clancy, Lindsay Clancy’s mother-in-law, told jurors that the family noticed a decline in Clancy’s mental health beginning in November 2022. She said relatives were worried about Clancy while also viewing her as a caring and affectionate mother.

“Lindsay was struggling. We were all very concerned. She was very nurturing, very loving. She was a wonderful mother. Wonderful,” Susan Clancy testified.

Her testimony was presented by the defense during the trial in Massachusetts. It was intended to describe Clancy’s condition before the January 2023 deaths and to provide context for the defense claim that a serious mental illness affected her judgment and behavior.

Symptoms reported before the deaths

Susan Clancy said Lindsay contacted her in November and reported feeling unwell. According to the testimony, Clancy was suffering from persistent insomnia, reduced appetite, anxiety and sadness. Her mother-in-law told the jury that Clancy was seeking assistance and described her as “begging for help.”

Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, also testified about concerns raised before the deaths. She said her daughter sent a text message on October 20, 2022, asking her to come stay because she felt seriously ill, had experienced terrible insomnia and was frightened to be alone.

“Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I am going to get through the day… It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone,” the message read.

Defense centers on postpartum psychosis

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her attorneys contend that she was experiencing ongoing postpartum psychosis when the children died. The defense acknowledges that Clancy killed the three children, but disputes that she should be held criminally responsible because of her alleged mental state.

Prosecutors have presented a different account, alleging that Clancy strangled the children deliberately before attempting to take her own life. The competing arguments place her mental condition before and during the deaths at the center of the trial.

Trial testimony addresses parenting and safety

Susan Clancy testified that she never saw Lindsay treat the children badly. She described her daughter as nurturing and loving, while still acknowledging that the family had become very concerned about her mental health.

Musgrove also testified that she was not concerned about the children’s safety when Lindsay asked for help. The testimony therefore addressed two issues for jurors: the seriousness of Clancy’s reported symptoms and whether relatives had reason to believe the children faced an immediate danger before the deaths at the family’s Duxbury home.

Case moves forward after prosecution rests

Prosecutors concluded their case on Monday morning, and the defense continued calling witnesses on Tuesday. The jury consists of 12 women and six men, with six of those jurors serving as alternates.

The proceedings are taking place at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts. Jurors are being asked to assess the evidence surrounding the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan, the prosecution’s murder allegations and the defense position that postpartum psychosis made Clancy legally insane at the time.

Number Key Point
1 Relatives said Clancy’s mental health declined in late 2022.
2 Reported symptoms included insomnia, anxiety, sadness and loss of appetite.
3 The defense argues Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis.
4 Witnesses said they did not observe Clancy mistreating the children.
5 The defense case continued after prosecutors rested.

Summary

Testimony from Lindsay Clancy’s mother and mother-in-law portrayed a mother experiencing serious mental health symptoms before the deaths of her three children. The defense is using that testimony to support its insanity claim, while prosecutors maintain that the killings were deliberate. The jury will ultimately determine how the evidence affects the criminal responsibility question at the center of the Massachusetts trial.
