Miami Mother Charged With Child Abuse and Arson as Court Orders Mental Evaluation

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 26, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Meliza Campos-Sanchez, a Cuban national who entered the United States through Florida in May 2022, faces child abuse, child neglect and arson charges in Miami. Authorities allege she poured hot candle wax on one of her young daughters and later ignited clothing inside the family home while her children were present. A judge ordered a mental-competency evaluation after her defense raised concerns about her mental health. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also lodged a detainer following her arrest.

The allegations stem from an Aug. 16 incident at a Miami residence. Investigators said videos posted online appeared to show the alleged conduct, while one child reportedly told a detective that she and her sister saw their mother start a fire inside the home.

Charges follow alleged abuse and house fire

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an intentional kitchen fire at a Miami home on Aug. 16. According to the criminal complaint, investigators later reviewed social media videos associated with Meliza Campos-Sanchez, who reportedly had about 87,000 Instagram followers. The videos allegedly showed her pouring melted candle wax on herself and on the hands of at least one daughter, followed by footage in which she sang and danced before lighting clothing with a lighter.

Campos-Sanchez is charged with two counts of child neglect, one count of child abuse or cruelty toward a child, and arson. The charges are allegations, and the criminal case remains pending.

Children were reportedly present during the incidents

The two girls were identified in the complaint as ages 3 and 6. Investigators said Campos-Sanchez allegedly told them not to be scared before placing a drop of hot candle wax on one daughter’s hand. The affidavit stated that the child had no visible injury from that incident.

A child reportedly told an arson-squad detective that she and her sister saw their mother burn a shirt, causing a fire while they remained inside the residence. The allegations prompted the child neglect and abuse counts in addition to the arson charge. Officers did not interview Campos-Sanchez immediately after her arrest because she was sedated.

Court orders Spanish-speaking competency evaluations

At her initial court appearance, the defense requested a competency evaluation. The judge ordered assessments by two Spanish-speaking doctors to determine whether Campos-Sanchez is competent to proceed in the criminal case.

The evaluation request reflects a legal question about her current ability to understand the proceedings and assist her attorney. It does not resolve the underlying abuse or arson allegations, which will be addressed through the court process.

ICE places immigration detainer after arrest

The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer with the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center the day after Campos-Sanchez was arrested. The request asks local officials to notify federal immigration authorities before any release so ICE can potentially take her into custody.

ICE said Campos-Sanchez entered the United States through Florida in May 2022 under the Biden administration. A detainer is a request for notification and temporary cooperation, not a criminal conviction or a final immigration removal order.

“This Cuban illegal alien is charged with child abuse and arson after she poured hot wax onto one of her own children and then lit a fire in her home,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that ICE would seek custody after the state case is addressed.

Family raises concerns about her mental health

Relatives defended Campos-Sanchez after the allegations became public and raised concerns about her mental state. Her husband reportedly said he had previously sought help and contacted police because he was worried about her condition.

Family members also said she had been prescribed medication but stopped taking it. The court-ordered evaluations will provide information for the judge, while her court-appointed attorney is expected to represent her during the proceedings. No outcome has been announced in the case.
