Murdaugh Defense Raises Possible Link Between Allendale Killing and Murder Weapon

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 14, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Defense attorneys for Alex Murdaugh asked South Carolina prosecutors to investigate an unverified claim that a weapon involved in a recent Allendale County homicide may be connected to the killings of Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh. The allegation surfaced during a hearing on Friday, August 14, 2026, and surprised both the prosecution and the judge overseeing Murdaugh’s retrial. Prosecutors later said firearms evidence from the Allendale case had produced no known ballistics matches linking the rifle to another crime.

Murdaugh is set to face a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his 2023 murder convictions and two life sentences. The court ruled that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors. Murdaugh remains imprisoned under separate state and federal sentences for financial crimes.

Defense raises an unverified firearms claim

At the hearing, defense attorney Jim Griffin told Circuit Court Judge Debra McCaslin that the defense had learned through published reporting that a recent Allendale County murder might involve a weapon associated with the Murdaugh case. Griffin did not identify the victim, the alleged firearm or any testing that established a connection.

Griffin asked the state to investigate and provide related records. He characterized any potentially favorable investigative material as possible Brady evidence, referring to information that could assist the defense. The request placed an unconfirmed report before the court but did not establish that the claim was supported by forensic findings.

The alleged connection to the Murdaugh case

The reported allegation concerned a possible third gun at the Moselle crime scene and whether a firearm connected to the Murdaugh family had later been used in another killing. The information had not been independently validated, and no witness or investigator presented evidence during the hearing confirming such a link.

Griffin referred to firearms testimony from Murdaugh’s first trial. A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division firearms examiner had testified that shell casings from the .300 Blackout rifle used to kill Maggie Murdaugh bore extraction marks matching casings found at the Murdaugh family shooting range. The defense argued that a match involving casings from Allendale could raise questions about the original analysis or the later use of a firearm tied to the case.

Prosecutors and judge demand verification

Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said the allegation was new to him and that he had not received information from investigators indicating a connection between the cases. He said he communicates regularly with SLED and would be surprised if such a development had occurred without the prosecution being notified.

“I have never heard the first thing about that,” Waters told the court.

Judge Debra McCaslin also indicated that the allegation was significant enough to require clarification. She directed Griffin to provide the defense material to Waters for review. The judge’s response reflected the need to distinguish a substantiated forensic lead from speculation circulating outside the courtroom.

Ballistics database shows no known matches

Later in the hearing, Waters said SLED had informed him that firearm evidence from the Allendale shooting had been entered into a national ballistics database. According to Waters, the .300 Blackout rifle used in that case produced no leads, hits or known matches linking it to another crime.

Waters said he would continue checking the information and confirm what investigators had found. The database result did not resolve every question raised by the defense, but it provided no current forensic support for the claimed connection to the Murdaugh murders.

Murdaugh’s retrial remains the central issue

The firearms allegation emerged as the court prepares for Murdaugh’s retrial over the June 7, 2021, shootings at the family’s Moselle property in South Carolina. His original convictions were overturned after the state Supreme Court found that Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors, depriving him of an impartial trial.

Murdaugh’s separate convictions and sentences for financial crimes remain in place. Whether the Allendale case produces new evidence will depend on investigators’ review of the underlying records, testing and chain of custody. At the time of the hearing, no evidence had been presented establishing that a weapon used in the Murdaugh killings was later used in the Allendale homicide.

Key Points

Summary

The defense has asked investigators to examine whether an Allendale County homicide weapon could be connected to the Murdaugh murders. Further review of investigative records may determine whether the issue has any relevance to Murdaugh’s retrial.
