Newly released police video shows the path of a gunman during the Aug. 1 shooting at an In-N-Out restaurant and nearby areas in Twin Falls, Idaho. Three people were killed and seven others were wounded during the attack. Police said an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper, a former officer and an armed bystander confronted the gunman as customers and employees fled. Investigators have not determined a motive and believe the suspect acted alone.

The attack begins at the restaurant

Police said the first 911 call reporting an active shooter came at 2:29 p.m. on Aug. 1. The released, blurred video begins with the gunman entering the In-N-Out drive-thru in Twin Falls. Authorities said he shot and killed employee Ashley Garibay, then moved forward, left his vehicle and fatally shot customer Christopher Claunch with a handgun.

The footage and police timeline were released to explain how the attack unfolded and how people inside and around the restaurant responded. Customers and employees fled as the gunman moved through the property, creating an immediate emergency before officers could fully secure the area.

Responders and bystanders confront the gunman

Former Twin Falls police officer and Idaho State Police trooper Austin James Scott, known as AJ, ran toward the gunfire, according to police. He drew his handgun but was pulled into a vehicle by others and received aid after suffering severe blood loss.

Police also said an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper was inside the restaurant, helping evacuate employees and customers while searching for the gunman. The suspect retrieved a rifle from his Honda Civic, and video shows an exchange of gunfire between him and the trooper. A bystander who attempted to assist the trooper and aid a victim inside the restaurant was also shot. Police clarified that Scott was not the off-duty trooper, correcting misinformation that had circulated online.

The shooting spreads along Blue Lakes Boulevard

After leaving the restaurant, the gunman moved toward Blue Lakes Boulevard. Police said he shot three people who were stopped at a red light, extending the attack beyond the restaurant and into nearby traffic areas.

An armed bystander returned fire, prompting the gunman to run toward a Tesla charging station. Police have said the actions of the armed citizen and the off-duty trooper helped drive him away from the restaurant and may have prevented further casualties. Earlier reporting identified the armed bystander as Jordan Salinas, 35, of Kimberly, Idaho.

At the charging station, authorities said the gunman shot a person inside one Tesla. He then shot and killed Dale Schultz and wounded Schultz’s passenger in a second Tesla.

Police pursue the suspect toward the canyon

The gunman continued toward the Twin Falls Visitors Center and a nearby trail while officers closed in. People evacuated the visitors center, while three others sheltered inside as the suspect entered the building.

Police said an employee later confronted the gunman on the trail, giving other people time to escape. Officers pursued him toward the canyon and found him near the edge behind a shopping center. Authorities said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his body fell into the canyon.

After the suspect was located, officers returned to assist victims while firefighters, paramedics and other emergency personnel provided medical aid. The timeline shows the response moving from evacuation and armed intervention to a coordinated police pursuit and rescue effort.

Investigators continue examining the motive

Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Chad Williams in earlier statements and said they believe he acted alone. Authorities have not determined what prompted the shooting, and the investigation remains focused on establishing the circumstances and motive.

During the briefing, Police Chief Matthew Hicks said officers would not use the suspect’s name out of respect for the victims and to keep attention on their stories. Police emphasized that employees, customers, bystanders and first responders took actions that helped people escape and receive aid during the rampage.
