Psychologist Says Lindsay Clancy Reported Male Voice Ordered Children’s Killings

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 19, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Lindsay Clancy told a psychologist that she heard a male voice ordering her to kill her three children and then herself, testimony showed Tuesday in Massachusetts. Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan, who were all younger than 6. Her defense argues that she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis when the children were killed at the family’s Duxbury home in 2023. Prosecutors rested their case Monday, and the defense began presenting testimony this week.

The testimony focused on Clancy’s reported mental state after the deaths and on concerns relatives said they had raised about her mental health. A clinical and forensic psychologist told jurors that he found no evidence she was fabricating her symptoms.

Psychologist recounts reported command voice

Dr. Paul Zeizel, a clinical and forensic psychologist, testified that Clancy described hearing a male voice after the alleged killings. According to his account, she told her then-husband, Patrick, that the voice said she had no choice and instructed her to kill the children before killing herself.

She had said that she heard a male voice ordering her, telling her that she didn’t have any choice. But she had to kill her children and then kill herself.

Zeizel visited Clancy in a hospital after the children were found strangled at the family’s Duxbury home in 2023. His contact with her was permitted after defense attorney Kevin Reddington obtained a court order allowing the interview.

Defense presents postpartum psychosis argument

The defense is seeking to persuade jurors that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis when Cora, Dawson and Callan died. The condition is central to the defense theory because it concerns whether Clancy’s mental state affected her actions and judgment at the time of the killings.

Clancy faces three first-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths. The prosecution completed its presentation Monday morning, after which Reddington began calling witnesses and developing the argument that Clancy’s psychiatric symptoms were severe enough to explain the events.

Psychologist rejects claims of fabrication

Reddington asked Zeizel whether Clancy could have been lying about the symptoms she reported. Zeizel rejected that suggestion, saying he found no evidence of malingering and viewed her as an honest person.

She was not faking. There was no evidence of any malingering. She presented as an honest citizen.

The testimony was presented in Plymouth, Massachusetts, as the defense worked to establish how Clancy behaved and what she reported after the deaths. Zeizel also testified that he allowed Clancy to use his phone to call her husband, saying he did so out of human compassion.

Relative describes concerns about Clancy

Susan Clancy, Lindsay Clancy’s former mother-in-law, testified that she had concerns about Lindsay’s mental health during the 2022 holiday season. She nevertheless described Clancy as a wonderful, nurturing and loving mother.

Lindsay was struggling. We were all very concerned.

Susan Clancy also told the court that Lindsay had been begging for help. Her testimony was offered as the defense continued presenting evidence about Clancy’s condition before the children’s deaths and the concerns observed by people close to the family.

Defense continues its case in Massachusetts

The defense resumed its case Wednesday morning in Plymouth Superior Court. The proceedings are focused on testimony and evidence intended to support the claim that postpartum psychosis played a decisive role in the 2023 killings.

The case remains before a jury, and Clancy is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The prosecution’s completed case and the defense testimony mark the next stages of a trial involving the deaths of three young children and disputed questions about Clancy’s mental state.
