Teen Accused in Cruise Ship Stepsister Murder Gets More Time to Consider Plea

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 26, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

The federal case against Timothy Hudson, who is accused of sexually assaulting and strangling his stepsister aboard a cruise ship, has reached a key pretrial stage. Hudson was 16 when Anna Kepner, 18, was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon on Nov. 7, 2025. His defense team requested additional time to consider a possible plea agreement, and a judge extended the deadline to January. A criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor said any agreement would likely involve a substantial prison term.

Case reaches a plea consideration stage

The defense originally faced an Oct. 23 deadline to determine whether to pursue a plea agreement. Court filings show that the defense requested more time, and a judge granted an extension earlier in October. The new deadline is set for January, giving attorneys additional time to review the evidence, assess potential sentencing consequences and discuss the case with prosecutors.

Hudson initially pleaded not guilty after a federal grand jury indicted him in April. The extended deadline does not establish that a plea agreement will be reached, and the case could still proceed toward trial if negotiations fail.

Federal charges follow cruise ship death

Hudson is charged as an adult in federal court in Florida under the federal high-seas jurisdiction connected to the alleged conduct aboard the Carnival Horizon. Prosecutors accuse him of sexually assaulting and killing Kepner, his stepsister, during the Nov. 7, 2025, voyage.

Because the alleged events occurred on a cruise ship at sea, the matter is being handled as a federal case. The charges remain allegations, and Hudson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Expert assesses possible sentencing stakes

Anthony Strazza, a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor who is not involved in the case, said the central issue in any negotiations could be whether prosecutors seek a sentence of life without parole. He said the defense might seek an agreement that would avoid a life sentence while still requiring Hudson to plead guilty.

“There’s not going to be any sweet plea deal, regardless of whether or not they take a plea. The numbers [years in prison] are going to be large,” Strazza said.

Strazza said Hudson’s age could create a significant difference between a life sentence and a lengthy term of years. He noted that a sentence of 20 or 30 years could leave Hudson relatively young when released, although the final outcome would depend on the charges, any agreement and the court’s decision.

Defendant remains in federal detention

Hudson is being held in a federal pretrial detention center after a judge ordered him into federal custody in June. Before that decision, he had been in the custody of his family while wearing an ankle monitor.

The detention order means Hudson will remain in custody while the defense evaluates its options and the case continues. Any change in his status would require further court action.

Defense and prosecution positions remain unresolved

The extended deadline indicates that discussions or legal preparation may still be underway, but court records do not establish that prosecutors and the defense have reached an agreement. A plea would require Hudson to formally admit guilt under terms approved by the court. If no agreement is reached, the federal prosecution may continue toward trial.

Hudson’s attorney, Eric Cohen, declined to comment. The next major development is expected to come when the January deadline arrives or when either side asks the court to address the case’s status.

Summary

The federal case remains unresolved as Hudson’s defense team considers whether to pursue a plea agreement. The January extension provides more time for negotiations, but it does not guarantee a deal. Hudson remains detained while prosecutors and defense attorneys determine whether the case will be resolved by plea or proceed to trial.
