Search ends at Abrams Falls
Jilani was hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee when he disappeared on October 5. According to his family, he was located three days later after a search focused on the area around Abrams Falls. Dive teams recovered his body from the water the following day, according to the account provided by his relatives.
His car was found in a parking lot after he had been missing for 72 hours. Investigators and search personnel later recovered his phone, keys and clothing near the falls. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under review, and officials have not publicly released an official cause of death.
Family describes suspected drowning
Jilani’s family believes he drowned after being caught in recirculating water beneath Abrams Falls. They said the waterfall drops about 25 feet into a deep pool, where hydraulic currents can pull people underwater and make escape difficult, including for experienced swimmers.
“What many don’t realize is that Abrams Falls drops approximately 25 feet into a deep pool of water where hydraulic currents can pull a person underwater and trap them in recirculating water, making escape extremely difficult, even for experienced swimmers.”
The family’s description represents its belief about what happened. A formal determination of the cause and manner of death has not yet been announced.
Missing-person timeline and recovery
Loved ones became alarmed when Jilani did not check in for several hours and his location-sharing service stopped working. His family said they were initially advised that hikers and campers often lose contact in areas without network coverage. As the silence continued, relatives requested additional help.
His sister, Asma Jilani Bustamante, organized an online fundraiser that announced the death and said the family’s mother was hospitalized after learning of the loss. The family described Jilani as a Houston resident and said he had recently become an uncle.
Safety warnings at park waterfalls
The National Park Service warns visitors that Great Smoky Mountains National Park includes narrow roads, blind curves and steep drop-offs. The park does not have lifeguarded swimming areas, and swimming and tubing are not recommended.
Park officials also caution visitors never to climb to the top of a waterfall. Rocks may be coated with slippery algae, and hikers have fallen, suffered serious injuries or died. These warnings are particularly important around fast-moving water, deep pools and areas where currents can circulate below a waterfall.
Family remembers a recent uncle
Relatives said Jilani had been excited about becoming an uncle and hoped to spoil his niece with gifts. They also said he planned to teach her mixed martial arts and self-defense, reflecting his interest in fitness.
The family described the loss as sudden and heartbreaking. Its fundraiser said Jilani was a beloved brother and characterized the death as a profound shock to those close to him.
