US Forces Sink Vessel Allegedly Supporting Los Choneros Drug Trafficking

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 2, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

US forces intercepted and sank a vessel in international waters in the Eastern Pacific on September 2 after identifying it as an alleged floating refueling station for illicit drug trafficking. The operation targeted a vessel that US Southern Command said was supporting Los Choneros, a violent Ecuadorian narco-terrorist organization. Marines and sailors from the USS San Antonio boarded, searched and cleared the vessel without incident before transferring multiple people to Ecuadorian authorities. The operation was conducted in coordination with the Government of Ecuador.

Interdiction in the Eastern Pacific

The operation took place on September 2 in international waters of the Eastern Pacific. US Southern Command said Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere carried out the interdiction at the direction of its commander, Francis L. Donovan, and in coordination with Ecuador. The command did not disclose the operation’s precise location, but said the vessel was connected to illicit at-sea drug trafficking activity.

Video released by the military showed US personnel approaching and intercepting the craft. The action formed part of a broader effort to disrupt maritime infrastructure allegedly used by criminal networks to move drugs and sustain trafficking operations at sea.

Boarding and transfer of those aboard

Marines and sailors assigned to the USS San Antonio boarded, searched and cleared the vessel without incident, according to the command. Multiple individuals were removed from the craft after the search and transferred to Ecuadorian authorities. The military did not provide the number of people involved or identify them publicly.

After confirming that those aboard had been safely removed, US forces sank the vessel. The sequence of boarding, clearance, transfer and sinking was presented as a controlled operation intended to eliminate the craft while avoiding harm to the people on board.

The alleged logistics role of the vessel

Southern Command described the craft as a floating refueling station supporting illicit drug trafficking operations. Such a role would allow vessels involved in maritime smuggling to extend their operating range, although the command did not release further technical details about the vessel or the alleged trafficking activity.

The military said intelligence identified the vessel as operating in support of Los Choneros, which it characterized as a violent narco-terrorist organization. Southern Command said removing the craft cut off what it called a critical node in the group’s logistics network.

“We are taking decisive action to dismantle and destroy sophisticated logistics networks used by narco-terrorists to traffic drugs and spread violence throughout the Western Hemisphere,” Donovan said.

Regional counter-cartel campaign

The interdiction was conducted in support of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition and the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere mission to dismantle narco-terrorist networks. Southern Command said the coalition would continue applying pressure to the logistical systems that support maritime trafficking.

The operation came during a monthslong campaign by the Trump administration against cartel-linked trafficking networks. Southern Command has reported dozens of strikes in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean against vessels it says are connected to narco-terrorists. It also said a Caribbean strike the previous week killed four alleged narco-terrorists.

US and Ecuadorian coordination

Ecuador’s Ministry of National Defense shared footage of the operation on social media, prompting a response from Southern Command. The command emphasized that the mission was conducted with the cooperation of Ecuadorian authorities, who received the people removed from the vessel.

The latest action followed a wider campaign that, according to the reported figures, had produced at least 227 deaths across 68 reported strikes over approximately one year. The continuing operations have drawn attention to the methods used against suspected cartel vessels and to the military’s expanding role in regional counter-trafficking efforts.
