Shooting reported near campus housing

Officers responded at approximately 1:28 a.m. Saturday to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, outside Virginia State University residence halls in Ettrick, Virginia. The shooting occurred near the Quad Annexes student housing complex. University officials said multiple suspects were initially believed to be involved. Virginia State University is a state-supported historically Black university located about 25 miles south of Richmond.

The incident prompted an immediate police response and an initial campus lockdown. Authorities later lifted the lockdown and said they did not believe there was an immediate threat to the wider university community. Police have not released a motive or identified all people believed to be involved.

Five victims transported to hospitals

Five people, ages 17 to 23, were found with gunshot wounds and taken to area hospitals. One person remained in critical condition, while four others had injuries described as non-life-threatening. One of the victims was a 20-year-old Virginia State University student who was later released from a hospital.

The other four victims were not university students. Authorities have not released the victims’ names. University officials said the shooting had caused concern among students, parents, alumni and others connected to the campus, while police maintained an increased presence during the investigation.

Arrest and felony warrants announced

Police arrested Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, on Saturday after finding him hiding in a dormitory closet on campus. Chesterfield County police said Harris is not a Virginia State University student. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney available to comment on his behalf.

Authorities obtained eight felony warrants in the case, including allegations involving malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The available information did not specify whether all of the warrants applied to Harris or whether police had made additional arrests. Officials also had not said whether other suspects remained at large.

Campus lockdown lifted as investigation continues

The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from Virginia State University police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances of the shooting, identify any additional suspects and determine what led to the violence.

“We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends and the broader VSU community.”

The university urged students to monitor their school email for additional safety measures and information about support resources. Anyone with information was asked to contact Chesterfield County Police, Crime Solvers or Virginia State University police.

University prepares for fall semester

The shooting occurred as residence halls opened to returning students for the fall 2026 semester. Classes were scheduled to begin Monday, August 17. The university had not announced whether the shooting would alter the academic schedule, but officials said campus safety measures and police visibility would remain heightened.

Virginia Delegate Rozia A. Henson Jr., who attended the university, expressed support for those affected. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger also said she and her husband were praying for the injured and thanked first responders and law enforcement personnel.
