Christa Pike Walking After Failed Tennessee Lethal Injection

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 9, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate who survived two doses of pentobarbital during a failed execution, is walking again, one of her attorneys said Thursday. Her legal team says she remains seriously ill with pneumonia, a blood clot and severe injuries to her arms. Questions remain about whether she has suffered permanent damage and how the execution attempt failed. A Tennessee judge has ordered officials to preserve physical and digital evidence from the procedure.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has halted executions for the remainder of the year while the consequences of the failed procedure are assessed.

Pike’s condition after the failed execution

According to attorney Stephen Ferrell, Pike was able to stand and walk around her hospital room for the first time Thursday, although she did not go far. Ferrell said her arms were badly injured and that she could use them only minimally. He also said her thinking remained unclear, with Pike losing her train of thought and forgetting where she was going.

Attorney Randy Spivey said Pike has pneumonia, cannot swallow and has a blood clot in one arm. He described her hands as severely swollen and said it was not known whether she would regain full use of them. Anesthesiologist Joel Zivot, who advises Pike’s legal team, said he believed she was still in intensive care.

Attorneys describe unexpected recovery

Pike’s condition changed unexpectedly after the execution attempt. Spivey said outside a Nashville courthouse Wednesday that the legal and medical teams had believed she was likely brain dead on Monday evening. She later regained consciousness and began speaking, leaving her attorneys unable to explain what occurred between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

“She is up and walking for the first time today, but just around the room, not very far.”

Spivey said Pike’s first words after waking were “Where am I?” and “Who are you?” He characterized her as angry and confused after the ordeal. Her attorneys and death penalty experts believe she may be the first person in modern history to survive an attempted lethal injection, though the medical effects of the drugs and the failed procedure remain under review.

Court orders preservation of execution evidence

Davidson County Chancery Court Judge I’Ashea Myles granted Pike’s emergency request Wednesday. The order directs the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve materials connected to the attempted execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

The evidence includes needles, intravenous lines, drug packages and the drugs used in the procedure. The order also covers text messages, encrypted communications, photographs and recordings, including messages sent through applications such as Signal. Preserving those materials could help attorneys and investigators establish how the lethal injection was prepared and administered and why the attempt did not result in Pike’s death.

The murder case behind the death sentence

Pike received the death sentence for the killing of Colleen Slemmer, who was 19 when she was tortured and murdered in Knoxville in 1995. Pike and two other people were students at the Knoxville Job Corps Center, a vocational program for young people from troubled backgrounds.

According to the account described in court records, Slemmer was attacked with repeated slashing before her skull was crushed with a piece of asphalt. Tadaryl Shipp, who is serving a life sentence and is scheduled for a parole hearing in 2031, was also involved in the killing. The other participant was 17 at the time and later testified for the state under a plea agreement.

Uncertainty over Pike’s future

Pike remains on death row, and no immediate execution date has been announced. The governor’s decision to halt executions through the end of the year adds a temporary pause, but it does not resolve the legal or medical questions created by the failed attempt.

The condition of Pike’s arms, her neurological recovery and the cause of the procedure’s failure are expected to remain central issues. Her lawyers are seeking to document the execution while the evidence is available, and medical teams continue treating the complications reported after the two doses of pentobarbital.

Key Points
Number Key Point
1 Pike is walking short distances after surviving two doses of pentobarbital.
2 Her attorneys report pneumonia, a blood clot and serious arm injuries.

Summary

Pike’s ability to walk marks a significant change from the critical condition reported after Tennessee’s failed execution attempt, but her recovery remains uncertain. Her attorneys are pursuing preservation of the execution evidence while doctors monitor serious complications. The case now involves both the long-standing murder conviction and an unprecedented challenge to the state’s lethal injection process.
