Colorado Teacher Death Investigation Focuses on Husband’s Changing Account

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 19, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Lindsey Barnett, a 37-year-old Colorado elementary school art teacher, was found dead at her Lakewood home on Aug. 13, 2026. Her husband, Patrick Theodore “Ted” Barnett, 40, told 911 dispatchers that she had cut her throat in the shower. Investigators later said blood patterns, injuries and other evidence were inconsistent with that account. Barnett was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and remains held without bond while prosecutors review the case.

911 call and discovery at the home

According to an arrest affidavit, Patrick Theodore “Ted” Barnett called 911 shortly after 6 a.m. on Aug. 13 and reported that Lindsey Barnett had cut herself and was not breathing. He sounded frantic and told dispatchers that the couple’s two young children, a toddler and an infant, were inside the Lakewood residence.

First responders found Lindsey in the shower with a 5- to 6-inch laceration across the front of her neck. A roughly 5-inch serrated knife was beside her. Barnett told investigators he had woken around 5:30 a.m., heard the shower running and went upstairs, where he said he found his wife bleeding.

Blood evidence raised questions

Investigators said the bedroom contained a large amount of blood on the bed, including the sheets and pillow, as well as what appeared to be blood clots. A trail led from the bed toward the bathroom, while comparatively little blood was visible around Lindsey’s body in the shower.

Officers also documented a footprint near the bed that appeared to come from a woman’s foot, a knocked-over plant and dirt scattered toward the bathroom. Later forensic processing identified additional blood between the bed and bathroom that was not visible to the naked eye. Detectives said the evidence indicated Lindsey’s body had been moved from the bed to the shower.

Injuries and relationship history

The affidavit described injuries to Lindsey beyond the neck wound, including bruises on her arms, legs, back and hips, a fresh injury to her left knee, a shoulder scratch and a cut on her left index finger that investigators considered consistent with a defensive wound. The neck injury appeared to have damaged a major artery.

Barnett told detectives the couple had experienced marital problems for several months and had been sleeping separately. He also said Lindsey had experienced prepartum and postpartum depression. Her mother told investigators that Lindsey had not expressed suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide and was making plans for the coming school year. The mother described Barnett as verbally abusive and controlling, while saying she had not witnessed physical abuse.

Detectives challenge the husband’s account

Investigators documented a fresh injury to Barnett’s thumb, which he attributed to an ultimate Frisbee injury from the previous month. They also photographed scratches and cuts on his upper arm, chest, abdomen and near his collarbone. A detective said the marks were consistent with fingernail scratches or defensive wounds.

Detectives further observed apparent dried blood on Barnett’s neck and in his beard, along with a smear behind his right ear. His hands were clean, despite his statement that he had moved Lindsey while checking her pulse. Barnett said he partially lifted her in the shower, turned off the water and then sat on the blood-covered bed while speaking with 911. Investigators said he could not explain the blood on his neck or behind his ear.

Barnett initially denied infidelity. Later, after a woman identifying herself as his girlfriend requested a welfare check, he acknowledged the relationship but said Lindsey knew about it and accepted it. Police arrested him later that day during a traffic stop in Evergreen.

Teacher remembered by school communities

Lindsey worked as an art teacher serving Hutchinson and Westgate elementary schools. The schools made mental health and district support staff available to students and employees after her death.

“Lindsey was a joy to have in our school,” Principal DeAnn Hoffman wrote in a letter to families. Hoffman described her as a “sweet soul” who showed extraordinary dedication to her students and helped organize special projects and the district art show.

Hoffman said the loss had shaken the school community. Barnett was booked Aug. 13 and was scheduled to return to court on Aug. 20. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case for potential charges.
