Kansas Man Allegedly Kills Four Children and Their Mother Before Suicide, Police Say

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 12, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A Kansas man allegedly killed four children and their mother inside a Winfield home before taking his own life, authorities said. Ronald H. Williams Sr., 53, reportedly called 911 and told a dispatcher he had killed his family. Officers responding to the home found six people dead from gunshot wounds.

The killings followed recent police contacts involving what officials described as erratic behavior, aggressive conduct and reports of gunfire. Investigators have not announced a motive, while the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department continue examining the deaths.

The victims were identified as Kelly L. George, 44, and her four children: Carol A. Williams, 9, Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7, Sarah K. Williams, 5, and Kelly M. Magee-Williams, 3.

911 call and discovery at the Winfield home

Authorities said Ronald H. Williams Sr. made a 911 call on Tuesday morning from the family’s home in Winfield, Kansas. During the call, he allegedly told the dispatcher that he had killed the mother of his children and their four children, and that he was preparing to kill himself.

The victims were found inside the residence after officers secured the scene. Police said Williams, George and the four children had died from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the suspect also fired the final shot heard by an arriving officer.

Police response and barricaded-house operation

Winfield officers were working a traffic crash approximately two blocks from the home when the emergency call came in. Police Chief Robbie DeLong said officers reached the residence almost immediately.

As the first officer approached, a gunshot was heard from inside. Because officers could not initially determine what had occurred, they withdrew, established a perimeter and treated the house as a barricaded situation. Nearly two hours later, officers breached the front door and discovered the bodies.

The response had a significant effect on the personnel involved. Peer-support teams and mental-health professionals were brought in to help officers and investigators process the scene.

Earlier contacts and criminal history

The killings were not the first time police had interacted with Williams. Chief DeLong said officers had dealt with him over what he called erratic behavior, including contact within the previous few weeks. Police had also received reports involving aggressive behavior in public and alleged gunfire, although officers could not determine where the reported shots originated.

Officials said those encounters did not indicate that Williams was about to attack his family. His background included a lengthy criminal record spanning nearly three decades. Court records showed felony cases involving drugs, battery, assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary, attempted rape and kidnapping from 1995 through 2024.

Kansas records also listed Williams as a registered sex offender under the name Freddie Lu’Carl’s Williams, with Ronald Williams among multiple aliases. The cases involved several Kansas counties.

Neighbors describe shock and unanswered questions

Residents near the home described deep shock after learning that children were among those killed. Ann Stofferan, who lives a few houses away, said the news left her heartbroken and struggling to understand the alleged violence.

“How do you kill your own family? How do you do that? I just don’t get it,” one neighbor said.

Another neighbor recalled hearing Williams make an ominous statement to his wife before the killings, though she said she did not understand what he meant at the time. Tonya Asbury, who lives about a block away, questioned whether earlier intervention might have prevented the deaths.

Investigation continues without a stated motive

Authorities have not publicly identified a motive or explained what led to the shootings. Investigators from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Winfield Police Department are reviewing the evidence, the 911 call, prior police contacts and the circumstances inside the home.

Chief DeLong described the killings as unprecedented in his more than 20 years in the community. The investigation remains active, and officials have not indicated that anyone else is suspected in the deaths.
