Lindsay Clancy Trial: Victims’ Names Fade Amid Support Rallies

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 23, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

As Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial approaches closing arguments, attention surrounding the case has increasingly focused on the defendant and public support for her. Hundreds of people gathered outside Plymouth Superior Court wearing pink, saying they wanted to raise awareness of maternal mental health and postpartum conditions. Bethany Mandel, a mother of six, said the three children who died have received too little recognition in the public discussion. The defense argues that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis when she killed her children, while prosecution experts have challenged that account.

Clancy, 36, faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan. The children, all younger than 6, were found strangled at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023.

Victims’ identities become a central concern

Bethany Mandel said public discussion of the case has emphasized Clancy’s name, behavior and mental state more often than the lives of Cora, Dawson and Callan. She argued that the children’s identities should remain central because they were the victims of the alleged killings.

“We all know her name. Very few people know the names of her children,” Mandel said.

Mandel also criticized the absence of visible displays focused on the children during the courthouse demonstrations. Her comments reflect a broader concern raised by some observers that attention surrounding a criminal defendant can eclipse the people who died.

Supporters gather outside the courthouse

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside Plymouth Superior Court in pink as the trial moved toward closing arguments. Participants said the demonstration was intended to support maternal mental health awareness and women experiencing postpartum conditions, rather than to endorse the deaths of the children.

Mandel said she was troubled that interviews with many demonstrators rarely mentioned Cora, Dawson and Callan. The courthouse gathering occurred while jurors heard competing evidence about Clancy’s mental state and her responsibility for the January 2023 deaths.

The defense centers on postpartum psychosis

Clancy’s defense has argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis when she killed her children. Defense evidence focused on whether hallucinations, delusions and a severe psychiatric condition prevented her from understanding or controlling her actions.

One account presented during the trial involved a male voice allegedly ordering Clancy to kill her children and herself. Dr. Phillip Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist and authority on filicide, testified that Clancy experienced a hallucination and what he described as a “delusion of influence,” in which she felt her body had been taken over and that she was like a “puppet.”

Prosecution experts dispute the insanity defense

The prosecution presented evidence intended to show that Clancy remained criminally responsible. Dr. Avram Mack, a child and forensic psychiatrist called by the prosecution, said her conduct on the day of the deaths was methodical and organized.

“My opinion is that she retained the capacity required for having criminal responsibility for these actions,” Mack testified.

Jonathan Hatami, a deputy district attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, also said the case should focus on the children and the conduct that caused their deaths, rather than becoming centered on the defendant’s courtroom presentation.

“These children died,” Hatami said.

Closing arguments are expected soon

The prosecution completed its case on Monday morning, after which Clancy’s defense began presenting its arguments. Closing arguments could begin as soon as Monday or Tuesday, followed by jury deliberations.

A verdict finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity would not mean immediate release. Under the outcome described in the trial coverage, she would instead be committed to a state psychiatric hospital and subject to periodic reviews.

Key Points
1 Lindsay Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
2 The victims were Cora, Dawson and Callan, who were all younger than 6.
3 Supporters in pink said they were raising awareness of maternal mental health.
4 Defense and prosecution experts offered opposing views of Clancy’s mental state.
5 Closing arguments and jury deliberations are expected as the trial concludes.

Summary

The trial has combined a dispute over Clancy’s mental state with a public debate about how the victims are remembered. While supporters have highlighted postpartum mental health, critics including Mandel and Hatami say the proceedings and surrounding attention should keep Cora, Dawson and Callan at the center. The jury will weigh the competing psychiatric testimony before reaching a verdict.
