Ronald Exantus Released After Completing Sentence in Logan Tipton Case

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 4, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Ronald Exantus was released from Kentucky Department of Corrections custody on July 29 after completing his sentence for assault convictions tied to a 2015 home invasion that killed 6-year-old Logan Tipton. A jury found Exantus not guilty by reason of insanity on murder and burglary charges, while finding him guilty but mentally ill for assaults on Logan’s surviving family members. Officials said he was not released early and that the department had no legal authority to keep him imprisoned after his sentence expired.

Release follows completion of sentence

The Kentucky Department of Corrections said Exantus served 11 years, nine months and 18 days before his July 29 release. The sentence was imposed by Woodford Circuit Court for assaulting Logan’s father and two sisters during the December 7, 2015, attack.

Corrections officials said the sentence was calculated under Kentucky law, including statutory sentence credits. They also clarified that the Kentucky Parole Board did not release Exantus and that he was not released early. Once the sentence ended, officials said the department lacked authority to continue holding him without another lawful basis.

“Ronald Exantus has served the sentence issued by the Woodford Circuit Court and has been released. He is no longer in the custody of the Department of Corrections.”

The 2015 Woodford County attack

Prosecutors said Exantus entered the Tipton family’s Woodford County home on December 7, 2015, and stabbed Logan while the child was sleeping. Logan was 6 years old. His father and two sisters also suffered stab wounds but survived.

A jury found Exantus not guilty by reason of insanity on the murder and burglary counts. It found him guilty but mentally ill on assault charges involving the surviving family members. Those convictions produced the prison sentence that ended in July, while the family continues to argue that the punishment did not reflect Logan’s death.

“The judge and jury gave this monster a slap on the wrist while handing down a life sentence to my family,” Dean Tipton wrote after the release.

Sentence credits and supervision history

Corrections officials said Exantus received nearly nine years of sentence credit as required under Kentucky law. He was briefly released to mandatory reentry supervision in October 2025 and moved to Florida. Authorities said he violated the conditions by failing to register as a convicted felon.

Exantus was returned to Kentucky after the violation. The Parole Board revoked his mandatory reentry supervision and ordered him back to prison. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman had urged the board in a November 2025 letter to revoke the supervision and require Exantus to serve the remainder of his sentence in custody.

Logan’s Law and its limits

Public anger over the case helped prompt Kentucky lawmakers to pass House Bill 422, known as Logan’s Law. Gov. Andy Beshear signed the measure in April 2026. The legislation revised provisions involving the insanity defense and mandatory reentry supervision.

The law did not affect Exantus because it was not retroactive. State Rep. Daniel Fister, who helped champion the measure, called the release heartbreaking and said lawmakers would continue pursuing reforms. State Rep. T.J. Roberts, another author, said constitutional protections prevent lawmakers from retroactively increasing criminal penalties.

“No family should have to endure this kind of trauma, and every Kentuckian deserves confidence that our justice system will protect innocent victims and hold violent offenders accountable,” Daniel Fister said.

Family continues its legal campaign

The Tipton family says Logan’s Law was an important step but did not prevent Exantus’s release. The family is seeking additional legal remedies and has launched a fundraising campaign to help pay attorneys while advocating for further changes to Kentucky law.

The family’s demands include limiting sentence credits for violent offenders, expanding life without parole for murder convictions and strengthening victim notification requirements. Before Exantus’s release, officials notified the trial judge, Commonwealth’s Attorney Kelli Kearney and defense counsel that they could pursue involuntary hospitalization proceedings if appropriate under Kentucky law.

Summary

Exantus’s release has reopened debate over Kentucky’s handling of insanity verdicts, sentence credits and supervision for violent offenders. Corrections officials maintain that the release followed the lawful expiration of his sentence, while the Tipton family argues that the system failed to provide accountability for Logan’s death. Logan’s Law changed state policy but could not be applied to this earlier case.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was Ronald Exantus released?

The Kentucky Department of Corrections released Exantus on July 29, 2026, after officials said he completed his legally calculated sentence.

What happened in the 2015 case?

Prosecutors said Exantus entered the Tipton family’s Woodford County home on December 7, 2015, and fatally stabbed 6-year-old Logan Tipton while he slept. Logan’s father and two sisters survived their injuries.

Why did Logan’s Law not prevent the release?
